St Mary's Church, Maryport
« on: Wednesday 19 August 15 14:08 BST (UK) »
I wonder if someone took a photograph of the gravestones at St Mary's Church, Maryport before they were removed. Some of them have been placed along the wall of the graveyard but I was not able to find my ancestor, Thomas Hayton. It seems a shame to remove the stones, I do hope that someone catalogued them first.

Hiya,
When did you check the old gravestones?
I cleared ivy from some along the back wall last year.
This ivy had been covering them for years.
The vicar didn't know they were there.
I took photos of them.
Any birth or death date for Thomas Hayton?

Hi there. Thomas Hayton died in 1844 at the age of 31. I think that he will have been on his own as his wife died a year later and is buried in Dumfries.

We were there in March of this year..We had a good look but could not find him. It is a  great shame if the graveyard was not photographed before being cleared.

It is good of you to reply, I do hope that his stone is amongst the ones that you unearthed.

Many thanks

Alan

Hiya Alan,
I can check the gravestones for you.
Was thinking the same thing as I carefully removed all the ivy.
A few have lost their writing.
One is jammed between a large tree and a wall and you can't read the inscription.
There are Haytons living in Maryport now.

Many thanks for your help. Thomas was my 3rd great grandfather. His parents ran Centre Farm at Edderside and are buried at Holme Cultram. This part of the Hayton line died out with Thomas. I come down from Bookless of Maryport and Varty of Flimby.

Many thanks,

Alan

Any idea what Thomas Hayton did for a living?
Whereabouts in Maryport did he live?
What religion or groups was he a member of?

Thomas had a Grocers and Spirits shop and adjoining house on the Quay at Maryport when he died suddenly in 1844 at the age of 30. The death was alcohol related. We know for sure that he is buried in that graveyard just not where.

I have only just found out that he was on the Quay from a newspaper report. I have walked round there many times in the past not knowing. Very strange. I shall have to find an old plan of the harbour.

North or South Quay?
My family have lived in an old house that was a pub for 65 years on South Quay.
What did the newspaper report say?
