Rider/Ryder families of Kingswinford/Wordsley
« on: Thursday 20 August 15 10:13 BST (UK) »
My ancestor William Rider or Ryder lived in Barnett Lane, Kingswinford or Wordsley, in the 1841-1861 censuses. He was born in about 1791. His wife was called Mary, and I'm descended from their son James Henry born about 1835.
I'm having trouble finding out more about this family because the names Kingswinford and Wordsley seem to be used interchangeably at times. I don't know the area very well so it's a bit confusing!

Can anyone help me find out more about William, especially the maiden name of his wife?

Whilst I am not able to help with the marriage, I can perhaps point you in the direction of understanding the relationship between Kingswinford and Wordsley parishes.  I suggest that you look at the GENUKI website - England - Staffordshire - Kingswinford.  It's slightly complicated  :)
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Thanks for your help.... yes it seems a little complicated! It's hard to know whether to look for my ancestors at St Mary Kingswinford or Holy Trinity Wordsley...

Hello
I've done a bit of digging and here's what I have.

William Ryder buried Kingswinford Holy Trinity age 75 18.4.1865 from Barnett Lane.
It looks like wife Mary was buried 8.7.1870 age 78 from Wordsley

William was baptised there William Rider s of John and Margaret 21 Nov 1790
Siblings Thomas 29.9.1776,Mary 2.2.1779 James 9.9.1781-18.1.1788,John 12.6.1785, Joseph and Sarah 30.3.1788,Richard 22.9.1793,Elizabeth 8.1.1797
Parents marriage Brierley Hill 10.12.1774 John Rider and Margaret Beddard
He married at Halesowen by the looks of it  2 June 1816 to a Mary Mather.
This may look a long way away but traditionally Halesowen also included Cradley just down the road..
Children baptised at Kingswinford
Sarah 29.12.1816
Mary Ann 15.11.1818
Emma 17.11.1822
Jane 13.2.1825
John 8.1.1826
William 18.7.1830-16.3.1832(st Mary's)
James Henry 25.8.1833 St Mary's
Ann Maria 2.8.1835 St Mary's

Mary Mather christened at kingswinford 10.8.1794 to William and Hannah.
Siblings  Sarah 29.1.1797,Ann 3.3.1799,Rebecca 26.7.1801 at nearby Brierley Hill,Joseph 11.3.1804,Elizabeth 22.2.1807,Eliza 18.8.1811,John 20.8.1820

It seems her parents married at St thomas Dudley 22.10.1793 William Mather and Hannah Westwood.
William buried at Kingswinford St Mary age 80  21.9.1848 died 15th from Wall Heath.Hannah 14.5.1846 from Wall Heath died 9th May age 72.
So they should be on the 1841.

The problem with the churches is down to subsidence from the mining in the area. The mother church was shut because of worries that it would fall down and services moved to teh new chapel .But when the old church didn't crumble into dust it was reopened .

Thanks for digging - so much information! I already have some of it in my tree with a huge question mark because I was unsure about the parishes.

Very interesting about the subsidance too...
