Manchester Company in 1900s - Blacklocks
« on: Monday 24 August 15 12:33 BST (UK) »
My grandmother worked for a company called Blacklocks in the 1900s.  I think it was on Brazenose Street in town and was possibly a printing company.  She was an envelope maker.  Any suggestions?

Hello,

What do you mean about 'suggestions'?

Googling your firm brings this http://manchesterhistory.net/manchester/tours/tour6/heronhouse.html which helps if you scroll down.

Hi Heywood, Thanks very much for that information.  I wanted to know what they did there.  My first ever job when I was 15 was in Queen Street, first at Leslie Fink Ltd, Estate Agents then later with the Manchester Youth Club Association which was in Gaddum House further down Queen Street.  I don't remember Blacklocks at all!

Hi,

1895  Directory  Henry Blacklock & Co. 12 & 13 Albert Square.

They were connected with McCorquodale & Co.,

Click link and scroll down page it mentions what they did and also about the time they printed 'envelopes'

Thanks very much Cancan.  Every little bit of information about the family history contributes to the bigger picture, another piece of the jigsaw. :)

I think I went there once, that's all. We used to go to a place on Tib Lane!

You don't mean Tib Lane where all the pet shops were?  It was at the back of what was C&A and later became Pauldens.

That's Tib Street  ( I think). Tib Lane is off Cross Street, round the corner from the Town Hall.
