O'Keefe Burials around Newry
« on: Tuesday 25 August 15 17:27 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I am hoping someone can provide me with some information as to the best way to try to find out where my great-grandparents were buried. I have contacted the Newry, Mourne and Down Council and they did not find them in any Municipal Cemetery so that means they would probably be in a Catholic Church Cemetery.

I do not know the area well and am finding it difficult to know which churches I should even be looking at! Parishes are probably Cloughoge (Upper Killeavy) or Dromore but I'm not sure.

I would be grateful for any assistance.

Martha Mary O'Keefe, died 3rd February 1923 aged 43 at Dromalane
Patrick O'Keefe, died 17th August 1946 aged 65 at Dromalane

Their Parents:
James Keffe, died 20th April 1916 aged 62 at Lower Fathom
Ellen Keefe, died 24th May 1918 aged 75 at Lower Fathom
John McAvoy, died 20th March 1911 aged 75 at Dromalane
Mary McAvoy, died 13th August 1917 aged 70 at Dromalane

Patrick O'Keefe's second wife:
Mary O'Keefe, of Beech Cottage, Dromalane, died 13th April 1960 aged 82 at Lower Fathom

You can select Roman Catholic from the box on right to filter out just those graveyards-

That's Great Thank you!

I think the Cloghoge grid reference J083239 is where I would likely find them

This makes the Church - Sacred Heart, Newry - Roman Catholic

Do you know where the records for burials for the graveyard there are kept?

It looks from Google maps arial view that there is no cemetery or headstones. Is it likely that they were removed to make way for the A1 road to the south of Newry? I hope not

Patrick

Catholic churches usually don't keep burial records. From satellite view it doesn't look like there ever was a graveyard there but perhaps someone with local knowledge will be able to confirm this.

In fact it does seem like there is a cemetery a little distance away from the Church of the Sacred Heart in Cloughoge. I don't know if it is new or would have had burials pre-1950 but I will probably contact the Church itself.

Someone with local area knowledge would be amazing!

Hello,
Very interested to read the details regarding your great grandparents because Patrick and Martha Mary are my grandparents.  As you probably know they had seven children; my uncles Jim, Jack, Joe, and aunts Maureen, Agnes, Roseleen and my mother Eileen.  I'm sorry I don't know where they are burried but I may know other things (as no doubt you may) about our family.  Would be great to hear from you.
Michael
