Cat green, Ruthvenfield
« on: Sunday 06 September 15 01:02 BST (UK) »
According to the 1851 Scotland census, family lived at CAT green, in the parish of Tibbermore. At first I mistakenly thought this place was Pitcairn green,  but realized once I downloaded the census page from SP that it is CAT green. Family, two of whom were bleachers,  lived next to McLaggan family of Ruthven House. Would this mean that the family worked at the Ruthvenfield printworks at bleachers? Has anyone heard of Cat green?

The National Library of Scotland maps website gives free access to old maps of Scotland. Click on "series maps", then on the earliest six inches to a mile Ordnance Survey map. You might find it there. You would think they would work at the bleachfield nearest to their home.

Hi,

If you post the names of the family members with dates rather than the neighbour's name, people might recognise a connection & have more to add to your query  ???

Parish: Tibbermore; ED: 5; Page: 4; Line: 10; Roll: CSSCT1851_82; Year: 1851

15  CAT GREEN, CHRISTIAN STEWART, HEAD, WIDOW AGE 58 b. Blair Atholl Parish
ANN STEWART, DAUGHTER, WIDOW, AGE 32, BLEACHER, b Luncarty Perthshire
THOMAS STEWART, SON, UNMARRIED, AGE 22, BLEACHER. b  Luncarty Perthshire
MARGARET ALLAN, NIECE, AGE 8, b. Luncarty Perthshire
DAVID ALLAN, NEPHEW, AGE 6, b. Luncarty Perthshire
ANN ALLAN, NIECE, AGE 2, b. Luncarty Perthshire
I believe Christian Stewart is Christian McFarlane, born Pitagowan, Blair Atholl, 1790. Her daughter Ann Stewart was born at Moneydie in 1817.

Additional census info for Christina Stewart:
1841: Parish: Redgorton; ED: 4; Page: 3; Line: 1170; Year: 1841 Redgorton Farm Houses.
1861 ???
1871:Parish: Mains; ED: 3; Page: 23; Line: 18; Roll: CSSCT1871_57 Living with daughter Euphemia and son in law Thomas Sword, Balmuir Bank Gate, Mains, Angus.

Christian's family were involved in cloth processing , mostly bleachers, but also weavers, beetlers and cloth lappers.

I wondered if anyone could help identify the Allan children in the 1851 census and perhaps know where Cat Green was in Tibbermuir. The family predecessing them on the 1851 census lived at Ruthven House - Donald S Mclaggan, landed proprietor.

Many thanks.

Cat Green appears to be a tenement as there are 4 separate units all called Cat Green per the census and on the adjoining page Easthough another tenement.  It was common for Employers to provide housing.  You can see this clearly here http://maps.nls.uk/view/74962865

Allan's would be the children of John Allan/Ann Stewart
16/10/1842   ALLAN   MARGARET   JOHN ALLAN/ANN STEWART   F   REDGORTON   /PERTH   390/00 0030 0095

Who was Christian's husband?

Don

Who was Christian's husband?

Thank you Annie and Don - this family tree is very tricky, with McFarlanes and Stewarts in 5 generations. Here is what I do know re Christian Stewart:

Christian McFarlane and Thomas Stewart, bleachfield watchman  at Huntingtower had 9 known children. I cannot find their marriage certificate so they may not have married? A Thomas Stewart, bleacher,  died in 1837 at Huntingtower, Tibbermore and I am presuming it is him - there are no other Thomas Stewart's recorded as dying in Redgorton/Tibbermore/Moneydie between 1883, the birth of the couple's youngest child, Thomas, and the 1841 census.
Known Children of Thomas Stewart and Christian McFarlane:
Christian Stewart
29/05/1814   STEWART   CHRISTIAN   THOMAS STEWART/CHRISTIAN MCFARLANE FR354 (FR354)      TIBBERMORE   /PERTH   395/00 0020 0158

Margaret Stewart
22/09/1815   STEWART   MARGARET   THOMAS STEWART/CHRISTIAN MCFARLANE FR357 (FR357)   F   TIBBERMORE   /PERTH   395/00 0020 0164

ANN STEWART
 31/08/1817 STEWART ANN THOMAS STEWART/CHRISTIAN MCFARLANE F MONEYDIE /PERTH 381/00 0010 0332

John STEWART
b 21 Jan 1820 in Redgorton, Perthshire, Scotland

Catherine STEWART b Redgorton
13/02/1822   STEWART   CATHARINE   THOMAS STEWART/CHRISTIAN MCFARLANE   F   REDGORTON   /PERTH   390/00 0030 0011

Helen STEWART
28/02/1824   STEWART   HELEN   THOMAS STEWART/CHRISTIAN MCFARLANE   F   REDGORTON   /PERTH   390/00 0030 0017

Helen Miller STEWART
04/06/1826   STEWART   HELEN MILLER   THOMAS STEWART/CHRISTIAN MCFARLANE   F   REDGORTON   /PERTH   390/00 0030 0024

Elspeth (Elisabeth) STEWART
15/02/1829   STEWART   ELSPETH   THOMAS STEWART/CHRISTIAN MCFARLANE   F   REDGORTON   /PERTH   390/00 0030 0034

Thomas Stewart
13 Aug 1833 in Redgorton, Perthshire, Scotland

1841 census:  Farm Houses, Redgorton. Thomas (Senior) is not noted - only Christian Stewart (mother and presumed head of household), daughters Margaret bleacher), Ann (ag labourer), Hellen Miller (bleacher)  and Elisabeth and sons John (cloth lapper ap) and Thomas. There is also a Peter Keir, who appears to be the son of William Keir and an Ann Stewart (b 1838)- but William Keir, father, is not noted on the census return. I am presuming he is the son of Christian's daughter, Ann, but this may not be the case. There is also an Ann McFarlane noted - perhaps a sister of Christian?

1851 census: Cat Green, Ruthven: Christian Stewart is noted as a widow. Ann Stewart, daughter, is noted as a widow. The Allan children are noted as being nieces and a nephew of Christian Stewart?
