Marriage Brick Wall
« on: Wednesday 09 September 15 20:51 BST (UK) »
I have been looking for ages for a marriage of James Brown & Ellen Bibby.
The only possibility was at St Oswald in Winwick but on the Lancashire Parish Clerks site the bride is Alice not Ellen It says the banns were called on the3rd, 17th & 24th Sept 1797.

I found a marriage entry on Ancestry for 1st October 1797 for James &  Ellen.

Is there any way I can look at the banns as the transcription says they were both of the parish of Winwick.

James died in Handforth, Cheshire in 1839 & Ellen also in Handforth in 1849. They are both buried at St Peter's Prestbury.
If this is my Ellen she would have been 16 at the time of the marriage.

Unless one or both of them were born in Winwick I don't understand why they would travel from Hanforth to Winwick to marry.

The children appear to have been born in Handsforth Cheshire so I would investigate where the parish registers are held and then see if they married there. Where did they have the children christened? That could also lead you to the marriage place. When was the oldest child born? That would give you an idea of when the couple married.

Unless the couple had connections to Winwick Lancashire I would think that entry is unlikely to be their marriage place.

Also bear in mind that it is only fairly recently that Cheshire Parish Registers have become appearing on line.

Handforth came under Stockport RD but there is no death in 1849 for an Ellen Brown.

James appears to have been 63 when he died so born approx 1776

Could this be Ellen?
BROWN   Ellen   68   Cheadle   Stockport   CHD/3/20    1850

I have just been looking at that one too and think it could be the correct one :)

If Ellen died 1850 then have you found her on the 1841 census?
I can see a record on Ancestry for a 60 year old Ellen with Henry, Thomas, Hannah and Harriott.
She was born in Cheshire.
If her age at death is about right she would have been about 15/16 years old when she married and as a minor would have needed  consent.
Would or could that be the reason they went to Winwick ???

Could it be possible that the marriage on Lancashire OPC is mistranscribed? Might be worth checking the actual register just to see if its Ellen or Alice.

There is a baptism for a Nelly Bibby 21 Apr 1780 at Stockport High St Presbyterian Chapel, parents James and Ellen of Whitford?

There is a Woodford near Handsforth, did it used to be called Whitford?

Children baptised after Nelly to James and Ellen are given as from Bramhall. Hop, skip and jump away from Handsforth?
