Zeglar Hugh Fergus b abt 1853 Perth son of Peter Fergus
« on: Friday 11 September 15 09:19 BST (UK) »
Hoping for some assistance please.

A very long shot with very little information so a tricky one... :(

I am looking for the birth and parents of Zeglar Hugh Fergus possibly born in Perth.  I have calculated his year of birth based on his stated age at marriage in Queensland, Australia.

There was some reason [as yet unknown] concerning details he provided on his marriage that cast a shadow over the veracity of the information hence I am posting to seek assistance.

When Zeglar married, for some reason he gave his name as James Smith.  However he used the name of Zeglar Hugh Fergus on the local Electoral Rolls and his children were registered Fergus. Some 43 years later he provided a stat dec for the difference in names on his marriage certificate.

On the marriage certificate he states his mother is Elizabeth Dodds and he names one of his daughters Elizabeth so this is a possibility.  In the amended certificate he states his father is Peter Fergus and in the original he states his father is a baker.

So in a nutshell perhaps we are looking for a child:
Zeglar Hugh Fergus
Born abt 1853 in Perth
Parents of Peter Fergus, baker and Elizabeth Dodds

Very little to go on I know but hope springs eternal.

SP 1861 seems to have it as Zedar Fergus age 7 Kinross Kinross , parents not showing on second person forename so maybe on 2 pages.
There is a Georgina Fergus showing age 2 -

An 1876 edition of the Dundee Courier reports a Zeglar Hugh Fergus as being a carter and charged with others of deceiving 3 hotelkeepers. Looks like he paid a fine and avoided 25 days imprisonment.

Thats brilliant.. ;D.thank you.

As yet I haven't found when he came to Australia but we have a record of him in 1885 and he married in 1889 so your post helps to narrow the time greatly.

What was the date of the newspaper please?  I can reference it with the date.
