A big thanks to everyone who contributed, it has been a great help sorting the Wright family.

I found Robert Wright a cotton weaver age 16 Lodger Castlegate Lanark.  He and Elizabeth Buchanan, his step sister arrived in Queensland on ship 'Conway' 26 Nov 1862.  I haven't had any luck with Elizabeth.

There are several Elizabeth Buchanans born around the right time living in Lanarkshire - and that doesn't include those living elsewhere or those called Lizzie or variants, or any errors in spelling or transcription of the surname.

Can you tell us the names of Elizabeth's parents for example as you would generally expect a 7 year old to be with family, unless circumstances were such that this was not possible (orphaned etc).

We need a bit more to narrow down the right girl.

You are right  she must have been in the care of someone.  This is what I know.

In 1856 Robert Wright (Robert's father) married Elizabeth Frew (Elizabeth Buchanan's mother) in Lanark

In 1859 Robert and Elizabeth Wright arrived on 'Herald' (no children listed with them) in Melbourne.
They moved to Queensland a year or so later.

Elizabeth Buchanan married in 1871 married name Sandilands.
From her Queensland Death 1923/C4692 her father Norman Buchanan mother Elizabeth Frew.

I hope that helps a little

Yes, I hope so. :) Some questions I'm afraid ....

Does Robert snr have any other children apart from your Robert? Same with Elizabeth Buchanan - does she have any full siblings?

It initially seems odd that the parents left for Australia without the children especially if they were not in the care of close family, however it was a different world then and families did part and then reconnect years later on the other side of the world. At 16 Robert would probably have been considered old enough to take care of a younger sibling. Do you know who the people are that he was "lodging" with?

Keyboard's find is worth considering.

Do you have the Roberts in the 1851 census?

Timeline (just trying to things straight in my mind)
1844/5 Robert Wright Jr born in Scotland, father Robert Wright
1853/4 Elizabeth Buchanan born in Scotland, parents Norman Buchanan and Elizabeth Frew
1856 Robert Wright Sr married Elizabeth Frew in Lanark
1859 Robert and Elizabeth Wright emigrated to Australia
1862 Robert Wright Jr and Elizabeth Buchanan emigrated to Australia
1871 Elizabeth Buchanan married Mr Sandilands

So Robert Sr and Elizabeth Frew did not marry until well after the births of Robert Jr and Elizabeth Buchanan

Questions
(1) Have you looked at the 1856 marriage certificate of Robert Wright and Elizabeth Frew? It will, for instance, tell you their ages, whether they were single or widowed, and it will tell you the names of their parents.

(2) Have you looked at the death certificates of Robert Wright Sr and Jr and of Elizabeth Frew?

(3) Does Elizabeth Buchanan's marriage certificate tell you the occupation of Norman Buchanan?
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
