How to get a marriage certificate in Arizona
« on: Thursday 24 September 15 12:36 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am needing a little guidance here.  Most of my research has been in England but I am now looking for one of the family who disappeared and I think he went to America.  There is a census in Yavapai County, Arizona in 1900 with his name on, William J Deam and a wife, Margaret, and a step daughter Ivy Brooks.  I have also found a marriage for Maggie Brooks and William J Dean on 20 November 1897 in Prescott, Yavapai County. Deam quite often becomes Dean along the way.  I would like to purchase the marriage certificate in the hope of confirming it is my William James Deam, born in July 1866 in Redruth, Cornwall. But, I am not sure what the procedure is in America.  Could someone help please.

Many thanks, M.

I see the listing for them here:  https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQ2D-4X2  If you have a Family History Center near you, ordering the microfilm listed here and viewing it yourself may be the cheapest option.  Considering the time frame, it is possible that there is little other personal information on the record.

If you want to order a copy from the source, this gives some information and links - http://www.azlibrary.gov/arm/accessing-arizona-public-records

Marriage Certificates

These records are held at the county Superior Court where they are filed.

Marriage certificates prior to 1950 may be held at the county Superior Court or at the Arizona State Archives.

Thanks for that Shellyesq.
Unfortunately the Family History Center is a little distance away so will try contacting someone through the arizona website first and if that doesn't succeed I will make the trip to the History Center.

Your help is very much appreciated as this is an unknown area to me.
Thanks again, M.

You might already have this info  ??? - The 1900 census gives a birth date of June 1865 - although  1910 Jerome, Yavapai, Arizona  gives him born 1868

Margaret is remarried by 1930 Black Canyon High Way Mayer, Yavapai, Arizona

Margaret S Roitsch  57 Age at first marriage 15 years.

FIND A GRAVE Differs a little and says she was born New Mexico  ???

The daughter of Henry Rogers and Mary Lindsay, Margaret Rogers was married three times. Her first husband was Ephiram Haynes Brooks. Her second husband was William Dean. And her third husband, who she is buried next to, was Herman Carl Roitsch.

I apologise for taking so long replying, life does tend to get in the way sometimes.  In case someone wants to know what to do in the future I contacted the County Court, in this case it was the Yavapai County Superior Court.  They were very helpful and I was able to order an email copy through them for a small charge. Very easy to do in the end. Unfortunately they don't have any family information on them so I'm not much further ahead.  Never mind, it's all a learning curve isn't it.

Regards,
M.

It appears he may have died in California in 1917:
http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn85032923/1917-07-11/ed-1/seq-5/

Death index:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QK91-X4SP

Unfortunately in a case like this where he died while working away from family it's not unusual that the information on the death certificate is fairly sparse, so that might not help either. It does give him as "Deam", though.

Thank you very much for that info.  I went hunting further in the first site and found several mentions connecting him with mining and he was thought very highly of by the sound of it.  I am quite convinced this is my William.  With some people they nearly always include the first letter of their second name, in this case William J. He didn't always but enough times to show a path. I have a George J in another family and in a list of Georges can always spot him as the J is always there for him.  One of the articles I found was in 1895 for mail to be collected in Globe for a William J Deam.  The newspaper articles talk of his time in Globe and Yavapai as well. Both him and his brother Tobias were in the 1881 census in England and then both disappeared. They were the two youngest in the family. Tobias is living in Leadville, Colorado in 1891 and first child born in 1895 with his wife Louisa Uren. Also in mining. (Haven't managed to find their marriage yet) I'm not sure if the brothers went together to America or one followed the other as I haven't found travel info yet, but I think it is the two brothers.
Once again thanks, M

Searching for Tobias turned up this:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QVSL-CRNS
 - Tobias and Wm Jas "Dean", heading to Arizona in 1888
