John Rowe or Roe
« on: Friday 25 September 15 17:58 BST (UK) »
Hello!

I've long been interested in my ancestry, and have been trying to find more and more about my ancestors and discovering new ones.

Most of the bloodlines leading to me have been straightforward, but my namesake one (Rowe) has been quite complicated. So far, I've gone as far as John Rowe, born in 1791, an Irish iron miner. He had a son named the same as him. Both seem to have been illiterate and spelled their names wrong, as "Roe", complicating matters. I'm trying to find more about John but also who his ancestors were.

In short, hello!

He was living in Ireland. His son John Rowe Jr. Born in 1838 (never had the Junior after his name, but will add it for simplicity) left Ireland and got married/lived in Cleator, in the UK. John Jr. Married a woman named Ann Jane, 7 years his junior (Née Roberts, then Murray from her first marriage and Rowe from her marriage to John Jr.). John Sr.'s wife was called Catherine "something", and they married in 1835.

John ROWE b. 1838 - d. 1873 MARRIED 1867 = Ann Jane ROBERTS b. 1844 - d. 1908
John ROWE b. 1791 MARRIED 1835 = Catherine (----------) b. 1796

John Rowe or Roe

Hello!

I've been trying to find out more about my great (x4) grandfather John Rowe and his mysterious wife.

The problem is, through either illiteracy or a spelling difference, some records have him down as Rowe and others as Roe.

Some things I already know:

HIM:  John ROWE b. 1791 MARRIED 1835 = Catherine (----------) b. 1796
HIS SON:  John ROWE b. 1838 - d. 1873 MARRIED 1867 = Ann Jane ROBERTS b. 1844 - d. 1908
HIS GRANDSON:   Samuel Thomas ROWE b. 1874 - d. 1910 MARRIED 1895 = Catherine Lancaster SHORTRIDGE b. 1878 - d. 1964

Both he and his son were Iron Ore Miners in Ireland. At some point, the Rowes moved to Cleator in Cumberland and stayed there until well beyond Samuel Thomas' lifetime. The earliest record of this I could find was John Rowe Jr's marriage, in the Whitehaven index (vol 10b p 751), which states he got married to Ann J. Roberts in Whitehaven, 1867.

I'm interested in finding more information about John the older (his parents, more about his occupation), and his wife's surname.

Will answer any questions needed
Cheers,
Sam

Hi

Welcome to rootschat

I assume that you have the father of  John (bn 1838) from his marriage certificate to Ann Jane.  How do you know the name of his mother.

Without more information it is  difficult to pinpoint the correct John Rowe/Roe. This is one possibility from the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie
there are others that could match.

Well, as I said, he was an iron ore miner.

I have the name Catherine from my (late) grandfather's research into our genealogy.

Here is a transcription of the marriage certificate of John Jr. :

19 Aug 1867 at St Begas Catholic Chapel, Cleator, Cumberland
John Roe age 29 bachelor, Iron ore miner, of Frizington, Arlecdon, (father John Roe, agricultural labourer) m Ann Jane Roberts age 23 spinster, domestic servant of Wath Brow, Cleator (father John Roberts, deceased, hatter)

I wonder how he came to that conclusion  :-\   :)
Have you any idea where in Ireland they came from.
