Yes the thinking makes sense, and I agree that a birth certificate would be a sensible next step (it looks as though Maria's birth was registered Dec qtr 1839 Billericay).

Just been on SEAX. Have found a marriage on 2 Feb 1833 in Sheffield between James BEARMAN and Lucy BELLENGER.

So that is now confirmed.

Great stuff...I had to type in Lucy only with no surname ...date and place of birth and go through the 1851 census returns until I found Lucy Bearman as the closest match......Result...thanks for letting us know.
