Lilly = Elizabeth! Who knew?
« on: Tuesday 29 September 15 14:07 BST (UK) »
Just had the following conversation with my mother.

"Remember your cousin Lilly, was Lilly a pet name?"
"Yes"
"So what was her real name?"
"Elizabeth of course, sur' what else could it be?"
"Er Lillian"
"Oh no, there are no Lillians in my family"

Wow I'm finding the world in this post living-under-a-rock life is very enlightening. :D

Thankfully I was asking because the Elizabeth I'd just found fitted in every way except first name.

Wasn't the present Queen Elizabeth's childhood nickname Lilibet?

I've learned never to trust names until verified........given that when I was growing up there was a distant relative everyone called 'Pimple'. I never questioned it until I got older, can't remember his real name now.

Just found a Lily Elizabeth birth that looks very likely, no mother's name listed unfortunately so I can't cross reference but worth a shot with another one that's just Elizabeth.

There are times I think no one in my mother's family was actually called by their real name until my generation and even than its not everyone.

My daughter's making her confirmation soon and the whole Saints name has seemingly changed and they can pick what they want . . .

HA 'Tis Hilarious ~ They are all going for pop stars names that you just KNOW they are going to regret.

Now that made me smile ;D

It is OBVIOUS once you know! I was scan reading some parish records in the church looking for their given name , KNEW 100% it was where my great grandparents had their children baptised ( and every descendant since) and couldn't find one of them, so a quick look at DoB, so likely DoBap, no joy, so surname, parents names checked and it was a child I didn't know of, thought maybe one which didn't survive, so wrote it down and so on each and every one I found I had no idea about.

Thinking they must have baptised elsewhere but I KNEW they didn't, they lived at Church Farm, 20 steps to the church door, it was only after I looked again that I realised each and every great aunt/uncle and my grandfather ALL used their middle names, so great aunt Ruby, was Ethal R and great aunt Hilda was really Mabil H, obvious when I realised but it really did flummox me for a while

That one little thing revealed has let me figure out where they lived after that German pilot went astray in 1941 and dropped his bombs on Dublin, narrow down to 4 years when Lilly was born and know they were still all alive up to 1964. Oh and Lilly had lovely red hair.
