Margaret Darwin (Darwen) from Preston
« on: Monday 05 October 15 04:28 BST (UK) »
Looking for help to locate parents/family of Margaret Ann Darwin (Darwen).  She travelled to Australia.  Headstone says born in Preston, Lancashire 25 Dec 1840.  Death records say parents are Joseph Darwin, Mary Waring.  Immigration to Australia in 1869 on Royal Dane has Margaret Darwen age 26.
I am trying to confirm parents and locate them and Margaret on 1841, 51, 61 census.  Possible lead is a Margaret Darwen age 9 Pauper Inmate at Penwortham on the 1851 census.
Would there be any records for Penwortham that might show details?  Any leads welcome?

From the image I can see of the headstone it says Preston. England.?
Do you definitely know that it is Preston Lancashire? Have you any written evidence that Margaret was born Lancashire?
Reason being and just something perhaps to consider is that there is a Preston in Sussex......I think it is now called East Preston.

The 1851 census has "not known" for Margaret's birthplace. ???
Lancsbmd have three Margaret Darwen's reg in Preston between 1837-1848 none have mother's maiden name Waring but of course it is possible that her birth wasn't registered.

I have found a newspaper article from the Western Star, Roma Sat 19th August 1916 that reports her death.  It says she was from Preston, Lancashire.  This may be incorrect as it also reports that she arrived in 1861 on the Royal Dane but passenger lists have it as 1869.
