Greek Family - John Theodore Gherashe/ Gerachi/ Jerasshy/Gharhse b 12 June 1822

Died in Australia, Dunolly, Victoria, Australia,  14 Dec 1864. Married Louise Charlotte Bendall 4 Dec  1852 at Christ Church, Geelong. He joined the Royal Navy 7 May 1845, and served for 7 years.
He died in Dunolly Hospital as a result of a mining accident 15 days earlier.

How can I find out about his parents, etc?

Hi,

My great great grandfather was Demetrius Gherashe, born 1857, and my great grandfather was Theodore Demetrius Gherashe, born 1885. My grandfather was Gordon Demetruis Gherashe. They liked to reuse names :) so it is likely that the man you are asking about is my great great great grandfather. Im not sure if anyone in my family knows the history far enough back to help though, sorry! But I can ask if you like!

Oh yes please!! He is actually my son in law's relative (his mother was a Gerashe) do you know the way back spelling? Here in Australia, it seems to have chopped and changed - I guess it was hard for people to spell? I am also in touch with my son in law's aunt - I know she'll be interested in anything we can find.

You might like to know that there was a Private George Demetrious Gherashe who was born in Oakleigh (a suburb of Melbourne in Australia) who served in the Australian Imperial Force in the First World War. He served in the 29th Battalion. There is another digger too, born in Rutherglen in Victoria - Albert James. Neither cited their religion as Orthodox. I have always assumed from his first and second names that he might have been Greek. Do you know anything about the origin of the surname?

I also just found this story about a Gerashe who is a football umpire in Warrnambool Victoria.

The bottom post refers to an umpire in warrnambool. Thats me. I have lots of information but it leads me nowhere. Your info about Ithaca I knew but could never verify. Perhaps you are from a different branch of the Gherashe family tree that can shed light on our mystery past. Please contact me so we can search.
