Where is Grandfather Morrison?

Freebmd has the birth reg of John James Morrison 1878 Mar qtr Stockton.

There is a possible baptism for......
John James Morrison born 26 Feb 1878, but not baptised until 13 Jan 1884.
Transcript says 1883 but according to the image it's 1884.

Mother Mary Ann
Not sure of abode but it looks very much like 5 Hubert St?
He was baptised at Holy Trinity in the parish of Armley Hall.

The baptism on the same day & living at the same address was for a child of a Samuel Mason. There is a John James Morrison living at the same address as Samuel Mason in 1901 and described as nephew. Co-incidnece?

My money is also on the one born Stockton.    Using the free search on the last available census he appears to be boarding in the Stretford area  - age a year or so out, but nothing new there.

Samuel Mason married Frances Ellen Morrison 1883 St George Leeds.
So Frances was Henry's sister
There are two births Freebmd for Morrison with mothers maiden name Tait both in Chorlton.
One of them was Leonard Tait b1914.d1997.
Samuel and Frances Mason had a son Leonard.
Coincidence or could it be a very tenuous connection
The other child, I'm not naming just in case she is still alive, wasn't born until 1922
It's a big age gap , I'm wondering could that point to a military record for John James?

I have sent for the birth cert of John James born 1878 in Stockton as the likeliest bet. It should arrive on Friday.

Leonard son of John James & Ethel Tait is my relatives father and is deceased.

I have been looking at the 1881 census again and am trying to work out who was the parent of John James the grandson as all the children listed are unmarried. If it is my John James the obvious father should be Henry but I found a possible marriage for him to Mary Ann Crookes in Sheffield in 1874.

Just looked at the 1901 census for Samuel Mason with wife Frances Ellen (nee Morrison) and John James is their nephew as the son of Henry.

This is looking very good. Thank you for pointing me in that direction.

If this is the right John James he must have made a drastic career change in his life from Greengrocer's apprentice to Manager of an Insurance company.

Please please let be the birth cert give me the answers then I can go back another generation.

The birth cert arrived today for John James. It was registered in the district of Stockton and his birth date was 17/2/1878. Parents Henry Morrison (Engine fitter) and Mary Hannah nee Dean.

So this ties in with the censuses and his baptism.

Not found a marriage yet for Henry & Mary and can't find them on the 1911 census or when they died. They obviously married after the 1881 census as Henry is still single then.

So now it looks like I have Henry's parents John & Eleanor to follow up.

Great news about the birth cert 

If you read back through the various replies to your post you will see that Henry was married twice.
the first time to Mary Hannah Dean in 1877 and his second marriage was to Mary Hawkes in 1884,
Yes he is down as being single on the 1881 census but it seems that a mistake was made by someone, it should read widower.

possible for Mary in 1881 - the age difference is about right for Mary & Thomas as on 1891
