If you have access to a/try, there is a family tree on the McAlpines here http://trees.ancestry.co.uk/tree/35917859/person/18902753427?ssrc= I think the tree owner is related to the eldest daughter Helen.

This is showing as the 1901 census for the family. Everyone showing as born in Glasgow, except for Thomas Snr.:

Thomas McAlpine 43 Gutta Percha Worker ( :-\ transcript rubbish really for his occupation) b. Ireland
Elizabeth McAlpine 38
Helen McAlpine 18
Jane McAlpine 15
Hugh McAlpine 13
Thomas McAlpine 10
Euphemia McAlpine 7
James McAlpine 5

Address: 8 Mckechnie St, Glasgow/Calton

1891 here:

Thos Mcalpine 38 Thoemaker (? shoemaker) b. Ireland
Elizabeth Mcalpine 29
Helen Mcalpine 8
Jane Mcalpine 4
Hugh Mcalpine 1

Address: 80 Sister Street, Glasgow/Camlachie

James McAlpine's age here in 1901 gives him a likely year of 1895-6. You should hopefully be able to find his birth cert on SP. You can use a wildcard of '*' on SP for spelling variants. I would search McAlpine as M*alp*n*

There is a death on SP for a Martha Picket (note just one t) other name Craig in 1904, with a birth year of c.1878. You could check this for spouse details etc.

Also on SP, a likely marriage for Mary's parents, Joseph and Martha Pickett/Craig in 1897.

Hi Monica wow thank you so much for all your research.  That's brilliant. On the marriage certificate it says James was a Shoemaker?.. I couldn't work it out because the writing is terrible. Haha
I have some idea about my mom's family now.
I'll have a look at the link you sent me :)

What was Joseph Pickett's occupation from his daughter's Mary's marriage registration?

Thomas McAlpine 43 Gutta Percha Worker ( :-\ transcript rubbish really for his occupation)

Gutta percha is a sort of hard rubber - used in golf balls if I recall correctly.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Gosh, those are words for an actual occupation! I immediately assumed it was the standard nonsense of transcripts  ::) Just googled, learnt something new.

Mags,
When I was at the GRO yesterday, I looked at the marriage for the man named Thomas Peter Edgar.

I could not say for definite if this is the same man that you are searching for but, there are a few similarities.
He was a labourer.

Your gran and Thomas P Edgar had 4 children together
You say your gran and your mother left Scotland around 1965 which is the same year that this man married in Johnstone, Renfrewshire.

He was a 45yr old bachelor who married a 43 yr old widow.
This man died not die young. He died in Johnstone in 2003.
DOB 27 Aug 1919

One of your mum's brothers had the middle name of Joseph.
This man's father was also called Joseph Edgar
