If she had a fling with someone (who may or may not have been a "Robert") and Mabel was the result, one wonders if she registered her as if she was a married woman, as she had done her other children.

Why wouldn't she just use her deceased husbands name, why make it different from her previous children.

I'm too thinking did he exist and was his name Robert Palmer for whatever reason, but the printer thing intrigues me.

for Arthur to become a printer it must of come from somewhere ?

I suppose I should try to find out what happened to Mabel and see if there are any Marriage records for her?

Her deceased husband was a plumber but perhaps Mabel’s biological father was a printer even if his surname wasn’t Palmer.

You have to remember that there weren’t  the same checks on info back in those days – we have had cases of grandparents registering an illegitimate child as their own.
