County home, Rathdrum, Wicklow, Ireland
« on: Monday 19 October 15 19:45 BST (UK) »
Hi.

This is my first time using this site. Does anyone know where I can find information about births at the county home, Rathdrum. My mum was born there in 1941. I know her mothers name and have a copy of my mums birth certificate, but that's all I have. I'm trying to find out further information about her mum (my grandmother).

Thanks

Hi There & Welcome

Given the timeline that you are working on it will be tricky to work on your Grandmother.

You can give us HER details if you wish and see can we help.

If your Mum is still alive please don't post any details on her as it goes against the policy of this forum.

Re the County Home

From what I can see online . . .

"Rathdrum was well known in Co. Wicklow as the site of the Workhouse, or as was it known ‘The County Home’. St. Colman’s is still known to the older generation as; The Home’. Today, however, it is the pride of Co. Wicklow, thanks to the work of Sister Philomena and the Sisters of the Poor Servants of the Mother of God, the staff and especially the community. Credit must also go to the Co. Council and Health Board who responded to the work of the volunteers.

"The Nuns first used the name St. Colman’s when they arrived in 1922 but it was not officially accepted until 1949."

You could try and contact the Sister to see if they have any records kept of your Mum.

There is an Irish address here ~

Hi Tara

Thanks for the reply. My mum passed away so I'm hoping it's ok that I include her details on this post. Her name was Brigid O'Neil and she was born on 22.5.1941.  Her mothers name was Katie O'Neil.  This is the only information I have.  I will also contact the sisters via the email address you posted.

Thanks
Andrea

Hi Andrea

I was hoping that they might have been rare names which might help ~ Gosh those names would be super common.

Was there any address on the cert or only the home's address ?

Did Kate register it or someone else ?

I take it that the father spot was left blank !

'Tis a tricky one !

Tara

Hi.

There was only the home address on the birth certificate and the name of a of Doctor. Also said katie was a 'domestic'.

I've emailed the sisters. The uk email address failed to go through, but the email to Maryland went through.

I think the Irish branch just had a snail mail address  ;D

Some organisations prefer dealing with these cases by handwritten letter.

If you don't hear back from Maryland then try a letter to Ireland.
