Burial in Chapel Haddlesey
« on: Monday 09 November 15 00:04 GMT (UK) »
I just can't seem to get confirmation that my ancestors, Mark Scatchard and his wife Hannah (née Terry) were buried in Chapel Haddlesey.

They certainly died there, because I have the death certificates.

Mark died 23 Sep 1891 and Hanna 15 Jul 1872.

Can anyone help with the registers?

According to the National Index of Parish Registers the church in Chapel Haddlesey opened in 1873, but as it doesn't mention burial registers, maybe there weren't any there. I would think the best place to look for a Church of England burial would be Birkin, the parish that Chapel Haddlesey was originally part of.

If your people were non-conformist, you would need to consider which chapel they might have attended and whether it had its own burial ground; this might be some miles from where they lived/died, in a different parish altogether.

You could try to write to this website

http://www.chapelhaddleseyparishcouncil.co.uk/Core/Chapel-Haddlesey-PC/Pages/Default.aspx

Then ask them to put you in touch with the Parochial Church Council who look after the church in Chapel Haddlesey about where the burial registers are likely to be held for you dates.

In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth

As far as I am aware, the burial registers for Chapel Haddlesey are still with the church.  AND there are burials at Chapel Haddlesey because I took some photographs when I visited last year.

However:

Hannah Scatchard is buried at St Mary, Birkin - Hannah Scatchard aged 52 of Chapel Haddlesey was buried 18 July 1872.  There is an additional note - "drowned".

No record for Mark.  The entry for Hannah is taken from a transcription by Pontefract & District FHS.

I'm assuming that you know that Mark Scatchard remarried in 1891 at Chapel Haddlesey?  Plus there are other Scatchard marriages at Chapel Haddlesey -

Thomas - 1897
Ada - 1908
Sarah Ann - 1892
Laura Elizabeth - 1908
Owen - 1877 (transcribed as Scratchard)

Plus 15 baptisms at Chapel Haddlesey.
