Andy,
Thanks, very good advice.  I'll give the MOD Records office a go. They can only say no and clap me in irons.  :)

I've already ticked the box (or was it untick :-\ so that it will not try and automatically renew) I confess I didn't get much more from them than I already knew. :-\

Thanks again.

David.

Further to my last post.  42RTR did eventually get some Shermans to augment their depleted Matilda numbers later in the desert campaign.  The Valentines arrived in the desert in 1942 and were used by 40RTR, 46RTR and 50RTR.

Thanks Andy and Clive for your inputs. I've listened and will act on them, whilst I do that I may be absent (with leave) while I conduct the research

Like the "Terminator" I'll be back, :) I will let you know how I got on.

Thanks again

David.

Andy & Clive,
I've take the next step forward. I've obtained a death certificate and since my uncle died more than 25 years ago, I have applied to the MOD for a copy of his service record as a general enquirer rather than NOK.

It seems the 25 year rule will allow me access to the majority of his service record including his personal details of enlistment and discharge, rank and awards, as well as dates and units served with.

I post this here in case it is helpful to others trying to research records of family members and are not NOK.

David.
