Please date my grandparents Freda and John's photo. Thank you
« on: Sunday 15 November 15 09:52 GMT (UK) »
Any help with dating this photo is very much appreciated.  The photo is of my grandparents, Freda and John.  Both were born in the Middle East; Freda in 1883 and John in 1879.  I do not know the specific location of the photo, but would have either been the Middle East or Sao Paulo, Brazil.  They lived in Brazil 18 months before they immigrated to the United Sates in 1911. I am also wondering if there are any details about Freda’s dress that might identify the country the photo was taken.  Thank you so much.

It's Edwardian but you probably already knew that.
Her hairstyle is typically mid - late decade which doesn't help with the location.
The heavy embroidery on her outfit isn't a typical western design so at least I would suggest it was made in the Middle East.
The only indication of where it was taken is that the card type is in English. If this was taken in Brazil I would expect it to be in Portuguese.

I am truly thrilled with this information.  My cousin and I research our family history and we have been totally unable to have this photo dated.  Thank you so much for sharing your expertise with me.  I can't wait to tell her.  You have been so very helpful.

Joyce

To follow this - where did the British have a significant presence in Edwardian times?
In North Africa the obvious possibilities are Egypt and the Sudan.  In the Middle East, Kuwait, Bahrain and Brunei are some possibilities.

Hope this helps.

This is excellent information.  Egypt and The Middle East are both music to my ears and it is exciting for me to hear that.  Thank you so much for helping me.  I really appreciate sharing your knowledge with me.  It helps tremendously!  Thank you.

From History of the Fez, Moorish Americans wore the fez from 1913 -1996.

Jennifer,
I am learning a lot today and I love it.  This is very interesting.  Both my grandparents were Christian and born in what is now Lebanon, then Greater Syria.  I am thinking that my grandpa’s fez was a cultural headdress for males in the Levant. I believe the style came with the Ottoman Empire.   I am glad you shared this information; it is something I would like to remember.  Thanks for your help.

Hi Joyce.......I know you did not request a restore and I took it upon myself to do one, as I felt the photo justified a clean and re tone.
