"Hooker Over" - what is this?
« on: Monday 16 November 15 19:41 GMT (UK) »
Hi

My ancestor is described on his son's marriage certificate as a "Hooker Over" in 1839.    He came from Matlock, Derbyshire.    Does anyone know what occupation this is please?

Many thanks for any information.

Unfortunately I don't know but as Matlock was in a coal mining area it might be that he hooked baskets onto the line that took them to and from the coal face.

The only other possible industries I can think of that used hooks was the cloth and woollen industries

Hi,

If your ancestor is alive in 1841 Census what is his occupation?

If actually living in Matlock, there were no coal mines, however could be connection to
quarries.

A hooker was employed in the wool and cloth trade so possibly another term for this.

Hi,
Just read your old message re 'Hooker over'. If you are still looking for information, try looking at early railway employees. The hooker over could possibly refer to hooking the carriage to the engine. The Cromford and High Peak Railway was open about that time and at Middleton Top, just outside Matlock, there is a very steep incline where they had to 'hook on' to a main chain to let the loco descend to the bottom of the hill to the warf at Cromford canal.Likewise, they had to hook onto the chain to get back to the top! They also employed 'hanger ons' for a similar task.
