since we were on a roll last night, I found a baptism for Robert Ewart Name   Robert Ewart
Gender   Male
Birth Date   25 Aug 1784
Baptism Date   29 Aug 1784
Baptism Place   , Chirnside, Berwick, Scotland[/b]
FHL Film Number   1067867
Reference ID   - 2:15VZMG7
Household Members
Name   Age
Elisabeth Darling
Alexander Ewart
Robert Ewart

But then found an 1861 census which stated Name   Robert Ewart
Age   76
Estimated Birth Year   1785
Relation   Head
Spouse's Name   Mary Ewart
Gender   Male
Where born   England
Civil parish   Heddon on the Wall
County/Island   Northumberland
Country   England
Registration district   Castle Ward
Sub-registration district   Stamfordham

So what do u think? are these the same person? could he be baptized in Scotland yet born in Heddon on the Wall?

The 1861 census does NOT say he was born in Heddon on the Wall. What it says is that he was born in England and was living in the parish of Heddon on the Wall in 1861.

Yes I do think the 1784 baptism and the 1861 census are of the same person. It is quite possible to get the country of birth wrong as Chirnside is so close to the Scottish boarder. That said I would still check to see if there are any other Robert Ewarts around in 1841 or 1851.

Having had a look I can immediately see a Robert Ewart baptised at Branton, Northumberland in 1788 and another at Etall, Northumberland (near the Scottish boarder and Berwick) in 1786.
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

I don't think that Robert Ewart you found a baptism for in 1784 in Chirnside is the same as the English one in 1861 because there appears to be a Scottish 1861 census that matches the 1784 baptism

Name:   Robert Ewart
Age:   74
Estimated birth year:   abt 1787
Relationship:   Head
Spouse's name :   Margaret Ewart
Gender:   Male
Where born:   Churnside, Berwick
Registration Number:   684/1
Registration district:   Portobello
Civil Parish:   Duddingston
County:   Midlothian
Address:   4 Adelphi Place
Occupation:   Part Wright (master)
ED:   7
Household schedule number:   94
LINE:   1
Roll:   CSSCT1861_123
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. Have you found that baptism ie seen a copy of the original as it could be a Dade* register which would give more details of where the parents came from

* Dade Registers from about 1798 to 1813. See a description at

Can I ask where you got the Kirknewton from as that is not what familysearch says. They say Berwick

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JWVC-HZV

Name   Mary Ann Ewart
Gender   Female
Christening Date   15 Jul 1804
Christening Place   BERWICK UPON TWEED,NORTHUMBERLAND,ENGLAND
Birth Date   08 Jul 1804
Father's Name   Robert Ewart
Mother's Name   Mary Brown

It is important to give the right location or it wastes a lot of time. If not sure its best to say not sure.
