Amelia Nicholson
« on: Friday 20 November 15 19:05 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find the maiden name of Amelia Nicholson, she was living as James Nicholson's wife in 1861/71/81 census. They were living at Camerton in Cumberland. She was born 1830, she states places of birth as Broughton, Cumberland on all census except the 1871 where she puts Bridechurch, Cumberland. I have been unable to find any marriage for a James Nicholson to an Amelia. I did find a Quaker birth of an Amelia Miller on 5th feb 1830.
Any help would be great.

Is this the family in 1861?
RG 9; Piece: 3937; Folio: 32; Page: 6;

James Nicholson   46
Amelia Nicholson   31
Thomas Nicholson   9
Mary J Nicholson   7
Hannah Nicholson   4
Ann Nicholson   0
James Stockdale   22

If so, one of the children's birth certificates would give you her maiden name.

Sent for birth certificate of one of their children and Amelia's maiden name is Perry (thanks Rosie) but I cannot find any birth details for an Amelia Perry born in Great Broughton, although can find details of an Emily Perry. Is it possible that Emily changed her name to Amelia?
Still cannot find any marriage details between James Nicholson and Amelia/Emily Perry.

Amelia Perry working as a servant - I think she and Emily are one and the same.

Sorry just realised that has already been given.

So she was single in 1851 and her first child was born 1852, which doesn't leave long if there was a marriage does it?

No I thought that, maybe they never married, just lived together.

That's interesting, so he was definitely born before a marriage.
