Thank you all for the speedy answers. I don't know how you do it?  How do I go about researching further back down this family?

Details that I have so far are as follows (thanks for all the help!!! ;D)

1.   Mother Sarah Ashley, born 1779 at Farringdon, Berkshire.  Not sure whom her husband was or her children?  Any details on their parents?

2.   John Ashley born 1807 at Faringdon, Berkshire.  Occupation?  Not sure whom he married or how many children he had?  Did have at least one child, John Ashley born 1841.

3.   John Ashley born 1841 at Ramsbury, Wiltshire.  He was a farrier, currier and farmer.  Married Martha Ann Phelps (gloveress) at St Luke’s, Finsbury, London on 29 August 1863.

Is there any way to go back any further and get the records of their parents as well as the missing information?

Thank you for the info. How do you get the details, if I may ask? Do you search the census records over the years (when did they originate) or are there other records I could look up?

Thank you for the info. How do you get the details, if I may ask? Do you search the census records over the years (when did they originate) or are there other records I could look up?

Censuses were taken every ten years.  Censuses from 1841 to 1911 are available online, mostly from paysites such as ancestry and findmypast.

Online free sites include:
freecen (for censuses.  Not complete)
freebmd (for registrations of births marriages and deaths from 1837 to 1983)
freereg (transcriptions of birth, marriage and death records from parish registers from the 1500s.  Not complete.)
Online Parish Clerks (OPC) (transcripts of parish registers and other local records.  Coverage varies)
familysearch (parish registers, censuses, and a host of other records.  Mainly transcripts, but there are several images of original documents)

I would recommend that you have a look on these free sites, get what information you can, then you will be able to get a sense of what you still need to find out.  After that you could consider which (if any) paysite has what you need.

On Rootschat, have a look at the [New Replies] tab to find replies to your posts.  And, when you are ready, have a look at the [Unread Posts] pages to see if you have knowledge that can help others.  Also, use the Search option at the top of the page - someone might already have posted information you need - and you could find a relative or two on here.

All the best
Philip
