The Ubiquitous Daniel Murphy
« on: Tuesday 24 November 15 16:40 GMT (UK) »
Good day everyone!  This is my first post to the "Irish" Board and, I would greatly appreciate the expertise and assistance of people experienced in researching Irish ancestors:)

I have spent a fair bit of time looking into the Irish family in NZ, but now finally, feel ready to start exploring details within Ireland in more depth.

My gr grandfather Daniel Murphy was born in Ireland abt 1854 (a very common christian and surname!!!).  His death cert lists his parents as Timothy Murphy and Ellen Hickey and only lists place of birth as Ireland (no county listed).

Daniel married Johanna Ellen O'Connor (born in Kerry Co in 1856) in NZ in 1877.  She and her sister Annie (and likely brother Simon) emigrated to NZ in 1874 aboard the Ocean Mail.  Johanna's parents are listed as Patrick O'Connor and Ellen Fenton (possibly Finaghty).

I am trying to locate more details about either of their families within Ireland.  I will be traveling there next year and would like to do as much up front work as I can before arriving. I assume the O'Connor's would be easier to trace because I know where they are from.

I checked the Irish genealogy web-site with no luck.  So my questions are:
1) Would the name Hickey be used in another form within Ireland?
2) Is there a way to track down Daniel's family without knowing the county (I suspect it might be Kerry or Cork but that is just a hunch).
3) Can anyone offer any other suggestions that might assist me?

Regards and thanks in advance for any/all assistance:)
Carol

Thanks very much Hallmark.  Johanna's death cert and marriage certs have provided us with the info we have.  She was born "about 7 miles from Killarney in county Kerry" as per her obit.  The other certificates have confirmed her parents and birth place. She married and died in New Zealand.

I found her parents marriage details on Irishancestry.  But the info is scant... it does however refer to their marriage in Firies Parish Church in 1836 (mother listed as Ellen Feinighty I assume the more correct Irish spelling?).

The RC parish church of St Gertrude wasn't built until 1864.  So not sure what was there before that date.

BTW - I did find out one interesting piece of information about Johanna's father - apparently he was a "waterworks timekeeper".

Carol, regarding the marriage of Patrick O'Connor and Ellen Feinighty, I'm not sure if you've seen the original church register yet, so I'm posting this.  Is it possibly the last entry down on the right page of the link below for Molahiff RC parish (variant Firies)?

Have to say, it's all a bit speculative at this point. The NLI records cover baptisms for the period that Johanna Ellen, Annie and (possible) Simon might have been baptised (if they were baptised in that parish), you might want to have a look through them, but some pages are in poor condition.

Dathai - that's very interesting because I saw the name Thade in another post somewhere that was transcribed as Timothy!  The dates and surname of Hickey also fit.

That sounds very plausible!
