Kate in Melbourne, Victoria in 1904...

A huge amount found for you Noy! Just went to run my eldest to work, bath the youngest and start dinner, and meanwhile you've all but cracked it!

Australian digitised newspapers - free to search and an excellent resource.

I also know that Catherine had a son in 1909 by the name of S. She gave S her late husband's Callaghan last name. As she didn't remarry until 1912, this child was obviously born outside wedlock. He was born in Northcote Victoria. I only found this out a few minutes ago when talking to Catherine's granddaughter. From doing a quick research I found he died from injuries from WW2 in Australia.

Catherine must have remarried. As it mentions that her only child died and we know her husband died. Her granddaughter (who I can't name for privacy reasons) was adopted and never met her mother (Catherine's daughter or daughter in law). Now to find out who she married or had a child with.

So the granddaughter doesn't know if it was her father or mother who was the child of Catherine?  Is that right?

The lad's surname of Callaghan is simply because in that era the child takes the then surname of their mum.    Catherine's surname was Callaghan due to her marriage to Reynold.   So any children would have her then surname of Callaghan, even though she was widowed.

 :)  :)  :)

My own birth certificate does not actually give me a surname.  My father's names including his surname are on the document, so too my mothers.   Surnames were not recorded on NSW certificates until the late 1960s.

So, although my maiden name is the same as my fathers, I actually acquired (became known by) that surname because it was my mother's then surname.

Cheers,  JM
