Place name in western Scotland - ?"Gourkhalt"
« on: Wednesday 25 November 15 13:08 GMT (UK) »
Hi there

Can anyone find the place in western Scotland mentioned in the attached obituary? The woman's maiden name was Graham and I believe her name was recorded as "Janet" Graham, 22, domestic servant, Presbyterian, on the "Broomielaw" passenger list when it came to Launceston, Tasmania, in 1859.

Many thanks if anyone can help.

I actually wonder if it's "Gowkhall", in the parish of Carnock, West Fife.

Regards

Thanks Malky, much appreciated. That looks right and there is a Janet Finlayson Graham born in Carnock parish in 1837. Not really "western" Scotland but I suspect that's it. I'll investigate, thanks.

A*y has a Janet Graham born 1837 at Innerkip, Renfrewshire - which is not too far from Gourock -could that be any help?

The address is actually given as Kempock - which is very close to Gourock station - could it be Gourock Halt.  Never heard or seen it called that though.

Where did the Broomilaw sail from? Innerkip/Gourock are very near Port Glasgow a popular emigration port.

Thank you both for the alternative. The Broomielaw sailed from Glasgow. I will look into that one two.

I purchased the Carnock baptism I mentioned above and the address given was Gowkhall, which maybe adds weight to that theory, but then it isn't in western Scotland so maybe not?

The Carnock baptism was to parents David Graham and Mary Ewings, and Janet gave one of her Australian sons the middle name David. But I'm not sure.

I think the newspaper cutting actually says 'Gourkhall' the appearance of a 't' given by a blodge of ink. If you look at all the crossbars on other 't's they are fairly faint. And west/east - an easy typo to make. Or perhaps 'west Fife' over the years became 'west Scotland'. Also 'Gowk' in manuscript could easily be misread for 'Gourk'.

Pity Janet did not give Ewings as a middle name  ::)

Yeah I'm leaning towards Gowkhall. I'm still investigating but it seems most of the Janet Grahams from Renfrewshire married in Scotland or are still there after 1859. Thanks for your help.

What were the names of her children in order of birth please?

The Scottish naming pattern may have been used which is a good pointer?
