Went through the Roger births in Forgan Parish, kept at Cupar Library, and find that they have been transcribed correctly
The attachment shows the place in five Births registrations.
So I am no further forward !!!

Great to see the records. Hmmm no doubt there then.

Googling -gogue as a suffix brings up the greek for lead... as in pedagogue 'leading children'. Could there be a sense of 'leading to Mo(u)ntmi(u)rry'.....or do greek words never feature in Scots place names?

Or might the name split after the first g so the ending is og/ogue like og/och/ock diminuitive Gaelic ending

Mo(u)ntmi(u)rrig - og(ue) little Mount murrig.

Or am I being a word nerd... :o

Maybe the St Fort records at the St Andrews Special Collection as suggested by DonM is the next port of call. Search for St Fort here:

NO, you are just very clever at these types of searches, Josey  ;D

I cannot add anything here, but fascinated by how this post touches on a number of key research issues for this period.

I actually wonder if it could be a misinterpretation with the word "Haugh".....

In a continuation e.g. Mount(murrighaugh) may have sounded like "murrig gogue"  ???
