Thank you Sandra.

Would it be likely to give place of birth (i.e. more specifically than just England) on any American documents?  This is all quite new to me.

 :)

On the italiangen.org index, there is a death record in Brooklyn for a David Haywood on 28 July 1882, age 51 (Certificate #9706) - about a year after the accident referenced earlier.  This matches in most respects except for spelling of the surname and may be worth checking out.

You can order a copy from the New York City Municipal Archives:

Thank you everyone for the replies - I had to go out for a short while - and wow!  So much new to ponder on.  It wasn't unusual then for Hayward to be written Haywood - I suspect that death may well be David's.

What puzzles me is that if he went to America in 1863 he should appear on the 1841 / 1851 / 1861 censuses in England - but I can't find him anywhere.   ::)

Thanks for all your help!

How do you know that he came to America in 1863?

Ahh!  In fact I have just double checked and he was granted naturalisation in 1863 - he petitioned for it in 1860 - the documents are on Ancestry.

So that's why I can't find him in the 1861 census - I have what I think may be him in 1841 living with his parents and siblings in Burslem, Staffordshire - but unfortunately it doesn't give his place of birth other than it was out of county.  Still no sightings in 1851!  I am trying to track his siblings to see where they were born but they too are being elusive.
