James Beugo from Dunfermline
« on: Saturday 05 December 15 11:48 GMT (UK) »
Morning all...

I'm stuck on my ancestor James Beugo.  All I know is that he married Anna Halkerstoun from Beath in 1737.   He had a son Rev John Beugo born 1743 who was the minister in Dunning for 26 years.  I've heard that the Beugos were Huguenots. There are a lot other branches in Scotland including the one who was best friends and engraver of Robbie Burns.  I can't match the two lines but am sure there is a connection with it being such an unusual nam

Any advice would be much appreciated.  Tab11 from the wet and windy Isle of Man :-\

Hi
Not much help I know but there's a James Beugo bookseller of Dunfermline subscriber in 1739 to the book "A commentary on the Book of Revelation" by James Durham.
Surely this must be him.
Also 1737 "Prima,Media and Ultima" by Isaac Ambrose.-this time Coppies Dunfermline
He seems also to have been printing books and to have been an elder in the Church.
Does Scotland have Guild records and apprenticeships? Could you look there?

ps there is a tree with a baptism 29.12.1702 Livingston  to a John Beugo and Christen Davie on My heritage .Just thought I'd mention it because of the Scottish naming patterns.

The engraver John Beugo born 1759 is the son of Gavin Beugo and Elizabeth Pillans married 4.12.1743 ,the son of John Beugo.
There's a Gavin son of John Beugo christened 30.8.1696 at Livingstone who may be the right one but that would make Gavin  47 when he married.John may well be the man married to Christen Davie.

Hi Ciderdrinker,

Thanks for your detailed reply.  I will follow the leads you suggested as I've drawn a blank.  So frustrated as I know there must be a link!

Thanks again,

Perhaps try the on-line catalogue of the National records of Scotland. Maybe the National Library of Scotland has something too.

The earliest publication I can spot for sale by "James Beugo, Bookseller, Dunfermline" is 1729 -
"THE MAIN QUESTION OF THE GOSPEL CATHECISM, WHAT THINK YE OF CHRIST? - author Rev Ralph Erskine.
