Marriage in Whiston in 1806
« on: Wednesday 09 December 15 12:49 GMT (UK) »
Hi
If anyone has access to the marriage records of Whiston for 1806 would they do a quick lookup for me please?
I have a Thomas Gammons and a Hester Campion married there 15 Oct 1806 (according to Family Search) and I would like to confirm this and see if there is any additional information please?
Helen

A transcription appears on FindMyPast (by Northamptonshire FHS) - no further information other than the marriage was by Banns and that both parties were of the parish of Whiston.  However, the date they have is 16 October 1806.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Thanks for looking.

Unfortunately most transcriptions seem to only have the bare minimum of info, so I was hoping someone had access to a film of the original which might have witnesses etc?

The Northants Marriage Index also shows ...

Thomas Gammons = Hester Campion botp 1806 Oct 16  Whiston

... nothing more.

Isn't 1806 slightly too early for witnesses to have been recorded ?

I don't think so, in my experience churches were using the printed books from at least the 1780s and witnesses sign or "mark", as did the bride and groom.

Added:  make that the 1750s

Hi BumbleB.

Yes witnesses were on marriage certificates as early as 1754 although not often family members.

Yes, but I have had occasions when a witness has been a family member and provided a breakthrough to a problem - it's always worth asking!

I quite agree, Helen, and I'm only sorry that I can't find anything other than a transcription where this information has been omitted.  It's always so much better to consult the original document rather than rely on transcriptions.

I don't know what Northants archives are like, but, as you know the exact date and location of the marriage, they may be kind enough to have a look at the register for a very small fee, or even none at all - you can only ask the question.  :)
