Hello Sandra

The gentleman who recorded the marriage didn't have the best pen but then he probably didnt think there would be a whole industry spring up where people down the ages will try to interpret his writing ;D

Notwithstanding this; what you have done in verifying is really great.

Just have my fingers crossed we can find Richard Nelson's birth or baptism.

Hello Ciderdrinker

Do you mean that you think James Sturmley Randell 16.5.1865 age 59 Putton is the James I am seeking?

Sorry - I am not 100% clear on what you mean either for either/both of the Susan's?  Its late over here and maybe my brain is not working too well??

Just located a entry that indicates James mother was Elizabeth Churchouse. There was no suggestion for the father???

If this is so then perhaps  the following 2 couples are more likely contenders as his parents as per ciderdrinkers post???

James 27.12.1801 s of Francis and Elizabeth (brother Richard 12.2.1804)
James 27.2.1803 s of John and Elizabeth

Dorsetopc - Chickerell baptisms
has
Richard ?? son of Richard & Ann illegible  5 January 1806

That might be the one. There are several Richard and Ann Randall children baptised either side of this one. Nelson might be mother's maiden name or given it was the year after the battle of Trafalgar it might be to commemorate Horatio Nelson

James Randall and Mary Sturmey married on 28th August 1773 in Chickerell, obviously too early to be your James's parents but could be grandparents and they preserved the maiden surname. Might be worth following through this James and Mary's children.
