Librarian in Cork, Ireland
« on: Saturday 12 December 15 15:22 GMT (UK) »
My great, great grandfather Miles Murphy was a librarian in Cork in the 1880s. This is on his daughter's marriage certificate. This comes as a surprise as he has an extensive history in the military as a private. Am I right in thinking he would have to have been very literate? Also, how can I find out where he worked? Any ideas would be appreciated!

Thanks.

Liz

I think a 'librarian' would have needed to be fairly literate but perhaps he worked in the library (porter, etc.) rather than looked after the collection.

A few things to consider-
what age was he at the time?
when did he die? (perhaps a newspaper notice might mention him)
have you checked for a Will Extract (might list his occupation)
could 'librarian' have been a mis-transcription?
any other children married around the time to compare father's occupation?
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thanks for the reply.

He is deceased when his daughter got married - so the exact time he was a librarian ( if he was at all)  is not precise.  It would have been in his older years, as he left the army when he was in his 40s. I'm not exactly sure when and where he died unfortunately.

I will check sibling marriage certificates and see what I can find. And I'll check wills. Thanks for the suggestion.

This thread might be better on CORK board as local knowledge might help shed some light on Miles Murphy. (just click on report to moderator if you do want it moved)
