Grandmother with two names??
« on: Thursday 17 December 15 15:12 GMT (UK) »

I have just found that my grandmother seems to have had two names.

She was born in 1910 and listed in her father's Army Records  as Evelyn (I have his attestation papers)

but

her baptism record gives her names as Anna Sophia

The parents names and surname are correct on the baptism record (I have a copy of the original), the birth date is the same, she was known as Evelyn Mabel her entire life, why would she have been given one name to be baptised with another. ???

Have you got her actual birth certificate?  Maybe she had 3 names - or all 4!

No I don't have, but she is registered as Evelyn Mabel on her father's Army records and I have those and as I said a copy of the baptism giving the other names, neither mentions the other so I don't think she was Evelyn Mabel Anna Sophia if you see what I  mean.

I know it was at times customary to give kids a whole string of names, but wouldn't they have appeared on the baptism record???

Surname birth was registered under was Rumsey, but it appears in places as Ramsey. The baptism is on Family Search.  Father James Arthur mother Cornelia Johanna.  She was born 14 Sep 1910

I was just curious as none of us knew of the other names :)

I can't see the birth registration under Rumsey or Ramsey in 1910.

Will have a look at the baptism.

She was born in Pretoria South Africa whilst her father was serving here.

Sorry it's so large, still learning the programme :-[

Oh  :-[ I was thinking this was in the UK so sorry no wonder it wasn't coming up!

I wonder if a close member of the family passed away that was called Evelyn and they called her that out of respect.

No one that I know of, Mabel came from her father's side, the other from her mother.....
