Swain Family
« on: Thursday 17 December 15 19:12 GMT (UK) »
Hello, My 4Th Great Grandfather William Swain married Eleanor Johnson 1816 in Branston Leicestershire.

They had nine children from 1816 to 1831, some children dying in Branston. I can not find anymore information on any of them till 1850 when two children marry. One of them being my 3rd Great Grandfather William Swain to Ann Judson and the other his sister.

Up to 1850 though I can not find anymore information and can not find any information on William or Eleanor at all.

Some people have got death dates but after looking into these they are not the right people.

Please people help me, been stuck on this for a while now.

I see that William jnr was a boatman; so it's quite possible that the family moved around, or rather up and down the river/canal.

(I think one branch of my family worked the Grantham canal - their children's births were registered at several different towns along the canal between Nottingham and Grantham).

Anyway, there's a 15 yr old William Swain as a male servant in Redmile in 1841 - that's the right part of Leic'shire - might be him - sadly he's not with his family to prove or disprove this!

Hi They are all the right person apart from the Redmile one, as I have researched the Swains in redmile and they do not add up with what I have researched.

On Williams Swains and Ann Judson's marriage certificate it says that William SNR is also a Boatman,
One of the witnesses on the certificate is Samuel Keal who is the husband of Williams sister Elizabeth.

At the time of the marriage Eleanor was 32 and I have found her birth in Branston.

A little more info that I found that the marriage is on the Pallots marriage index as Barnstaple in Devon but has written on it Branston Leicestershire.

Also it has Eleanor on top with William at the Bottom with the message of with consent of guardians in the middle.

Been stuck on this for a while now :(

Eleanor's date of birth doesn't ring true if the marriage needed guardians' consent.

Annie this is what I thought, but it fits in with the birth of Eleanor Johnson in Branston and then them staying there till 1831 to have children.

As you can see from the attachment it says Branston, Leicestershire but on the Pallots index it has Barnstaple
