Good grief heywood!
Where do you find this stuff.
I've been looking for ages and just have mum's last memories to go on.

Thank you. That's wonderful.

I put 1849 instead of 1869 as marriage year, sorry!

Hmm that's strange.
Thanks for your help by the way.

My mum was broken in body when she died but her memory was sharp as a tack.

She said:

John Harling was born about 1803
He married Margaret Hoole born about 1805.

They had 6 kids.
One was Charles Harling. Born about 1826
                                      Died about 1907

He married Phoebe Loverage.
They had one child.
Elizabeth Loverage Harling (1848-1894)
(I think Elizabeth tripped over a dog going upstairs and fell. She died a few days later).
She married James Parker.  (1840-1901)
They had six children.

Okay heyward. I have to write that down on paper and compare with your information. I'm on an iphone a d the screen is too small.

Thank you.

Beer houses tended to be more modest places than a pub, often someone's front room.  The main difference was that a beerhouse couldn't sell wine and spirits.  Wikipedia has a good explanation.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pub#Beer_Houses_and_the_1830_Beer_Act.

Charles Harling was fined £5 (or one month's imprisonment) at the Manchester police court at the end of November 1865 for running a dog fight at the Black Boy.  He was back before the court again in the second week of December as one of 19 arrested for dog fighting at another pub.  He was fined another £5 or month inside.  Police court records tend to be hard to find so whether he paid the fine or not - don't know.

O thanks Max that's fabulous!
I can leave off investigating prisons.
I can see where my grandmother and mother and sister get their ... Er ... Gambling problem from!

Very interesting about the informality of beer halls.

You know I had delusions of grandeur thinking my distant relatives were owners of a grand establishment.
I'm wondering now if they just worked in one, albeit more modest than I was expecting.

There's always the canaries  :)

While one can't be sure that the house numbers or the buildings haven't changed over the years, 98 Tib Street was, looking at the way the 1891 census is laid out, quite near to the junction with Whittle Street.  If you Google earth Manchester and seek out Tib Street, the occupiers of 98 on my edition are Oliver Morosini, hairdressers. The Tile House specialists on the first pic that Sarah posted is on the corner of Carpenters Lane and is (on present edition of Google earth) occupied by a shop called Military Kit.  If you find that and keep it on your left, "walk" your way up the street and you'll find the hairdressers just past the Warwick Street junction.

Good luck!

sarah, thank you for the photos. Makes me feel closer to my old nan, who came from Manchester to Melbourne as a war bride.
She was and remains the person who loved me most in all the world. The pictures have made me quite nostalgic. She died when I was 16.
Thank you Max D. I'll take that walk. You are very kind to take the time to make it possible for me to do so.
