PINCH, John - stone mason
« on: Sunday 03 January 16 01:23 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I'm trying to work out where John PINCH is from. This is what I have;

John PINCH, a stone mason, married Ellen BRADBOURN 08/02/1796 at St. Mary, Lancaster. Married by banns. One of the witnesses was Charles PINCH (I think anyway, It's tricky to read).

Marrying a few years before (1791) in the same church is a Christopher PINCH, stone mason.

I don't believe John PINCH was actually from Lancaster but I don't know where he did come from. I keep seeing the name PINCH pop up in Cornwall and Devon, so I thought it's possible he was from the south-west but it's only really a hunch.

John PINCH died in 1830 and was buried at St. Mary, Lancaster. The age with the burial record gives an aprox. year of birth of 1770.

Can anyone help?

Many thanks, Rowan Tree  :)

There is a tree on Ancestry that seems to show that he was born in 1770 in Lancaster.
It also mention the same marriage that you have provided and the same date of death.

What make you think he was not born in Lancaster?

The marriages of both and the baptisms of their children were at St Mary the Priory Lancaster.

Have you looked at , or can anyone supply parish records for that church?

There is a James Pinch ( must be an infant) son of James and Deborah buried in Yarm North Riding Yorkshire 1736

I notice Lancashire OPC starts with Christopher 1791. Maybe look outwards from Lancs before deciding Cornwall is the place. Check alternate spellings/pronunciations :)

There are several children baptised to a Thomas and Mary PUNCH in Dent, Yorkshire, including a Christopher in 1769 and John in 1770. A burial at St John's Preston Lancs for a Christopher PINCH in 1805, age 36 (born approx 1769).

An easy jump from PUNCH to PINCH?

Another son, Vincent, baptised 1779, becomes Vincent PINCH on the 1841 and 1851 census where he is still in Dent.
Father Thomas appears to have been born in Dent in 1744 to mother Jane Punch and married Mary Murthwaite in 1767.

What a wealth of interesting replies. Thanks guys.

Schoch = Thanks for your post. Using LancsOPC there doesn't seem to be any sign of the PINCH family in Lancaster before Christopher PINCH's 1791 marriage. No Christopher or John PINCH's were born/baptised in the Lancaster area. And the coverage on LancsOPC is complete for baptisms in the timeframe I'm looking at.
Also, I have a tree on Ancestry, so it's possible you may have spotted my tree.

DavidG02 = Thanks for you post. I've been using LancsOPC which has excellent coverage for Lancaster;
http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Lancaster/index.html
I've also been using Ancestry which has been helpful too.

jomcd967 = Thanks for your posts (they've got me really interested - there's some real potential in what you've turned up - excited). I think it is a really easy jump from PUNCH to PINCH. Also, John had a son named Thomas and a daughter named Jane, which is always helpful. I'm going to look into the Yorkshire PUNCH family and see what I can turn up.

Thanks again guys - I'm really grateful.
