Humphrey Farrant - Great Dunmow
« on: Sunday 03 January 16 14:16 GMT (UK) »
Hello!

I'd be very grateful if anyone could shed some light on Humphrey Farrant/Farrent/Farrand (one of those names with a million possible spellings grr). I believe he was born in 1773 and died in 1851. I think he married Jane Choat in 1795 in Great Thurlow in Suffolk and was the father of another Humphrey Farrant who was born in Great Wratting.

He worked in Great Dunmow for over 40 years for Sir George Beaumont's family. He was an outdoor servant of some description but I don't know exactly what he did. If anyone could add anything at all I'd really appreciate it.

Many thanks in advance for your help.

The 1841 shows him as 68 and wife Jane 73 - both shown as not born in county and Humphrey is a male servant

Could he have been born in Suffolk where he and Jane married?

The 1851 death was in the June qtr and the 1851 census was taken 30th March so he should be found on that census - but I can't see him but there are missing 1851 census records for Gt Dunmow.

He was buried 13.6.1851 at St Mary the Virgin Gt Dunmow - aged 83 - birthyear 1768

Thanks very much!

Yes, it's definitely possible that he was born in Suffolk. The family seems to have always lived around the Essex/Suffolk border which appears to shift back and forth over time!

I'll move my question to the Suffolk board :)

Edit: Thanks for moving my thread :)

Hello LJ

I have looked for clues on the Suffolk Burial Index - lots of early (1755>) Farrant burials in Haverhill, St Mary - this entry may be of interest:
Rhoda Farrant buried 20 June 1799 age 6 mths daughter of Humphrey (gardener) & Ann, dissenter, Hamlet.
I know your chap was married to Jane but the fathers name may have some significance.

What did your couple name their children?

K

Thanks very much K, that's very interesting. The only children I know of from Humphrey and Jane are another Humphrey and I think Joseph.
