John Fynney (d.1828) - links to Hulme/Johnson/Bowers/Koziah
« on: Sunday 03 January 16 22:37 GMT (UK) »
I am a descendant of the "Fynney Johnson" family. I have traced the family back to a marriage between Ruth Fynney (d.1812) and Ralph Johnson (d.1811) from Alstonfield.

I am trying to learn more about the Fynney connection. Long shot but does anyone recognise any of the below? Can anyone expand?

I believe:

Father: possibly William Fynney
Mother: ?
Brother: John Fynney (d.1828) of Compton House in Leek
       (No know marriage/children)
Sister: Sarah Fynney m. ? Hulme
        (Children: Judith, Fynney, John)
Sister: Ruth Fynney m. Ralph Johnson. <----- my connection
         (Children: William Fynney, Ralph, Esther)
Sister: ? Fynney m. ? Bowers
(Children: Fynney, Judith, John) - same as above!!

I know John had a niece Catherine whose married name is Koziah.

Ring any bells?

I "believe" Ruth's father was a William.

I am also trying to determine the relationship between John Fynney and a Fielding Best Fynney. The surname maybe purely a coincidence. I have records of business transactions and it is worth noting the John moved into Fielding's "Compton House" property after he died.

Looks like FBF was baptised 12 February 1743 Cheddleton Staffs. Son of Samuel Fynney and Sarah

There are numerous children born in the area to a Samuel and Sarah Fynney including a William in 1731 at Dilhorne, the rest at Cheddleton 6 miles away.

Samuel Fynney married Sarah Best 16 September 1730 Leek, Stafford.

Possibly John Fynney was Fieldings nephew if you could prove the William born in 1731 is John's father and Fieldings brother.

Hi

I have looked at the Will of John Fynney dated 1830, ( it is only my opinion ) but I think it reads

" my nieces Catherine  KEZIAH and Judith Bowers.

KEZIAH  was baptized 4 April 1790 Alstonfield, daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth BOWERS.

Wow - many thanks for all of that.

You raise a key point over Keziah (especially as this unusual "surname" returned no matches. I have a copy of the will so I will double check. There is a similar part that talks of John Charles (these being his nephewS not nephew).

Thanks again - big help

Hi

The part that mentions John Charles, again I think it should read

" I give and bequeath to John, CHARLES and Glaphira, sons and daughter of Richard Tomlinson of Leek"

These baptisms seem to fit the family, they were all baptised 26 November 1822 in Leek, children of Richard Tomlinson and Catherine.

John FYNNEY Tomlinson born 17 October 1813
Glaphira Tomlinson born    9 April 1818
Elizabeth FYNNEY Tomlinson born    13 March 1810
CHARLES Daintry Tomlinson born    7 October 1815

Not too sure who Catherine is though, can't find a marriage to a Richard Tomlinson.

Yes - agree about the John Charles thing.

Not sure how the Tomlinson's fit in with the Fynney's but the inclusion of Fynney in the names suggest there is one.

Elizabeth is refered to as "who now lives with me" by John Fynney.

I had wondered whether Catherine was a sister of John Fynney but none of the Tomlinson's are refered to as nieces, nephews, etc - a proper puzzle!
