Does it say if father is deceased?

No it does not state that William is deceased.  That does not mean that he wasn't, maybe she was only asked for her fathers name/occupation.  As far as I am aware it is not a question that would be routinely asked.

Thanks again Rosie

the fathers name and occupation do fit but where she is in the census is quite a mystery.    Loathe to add her to the family tree without concrete evidence.

You may need to resort to purchasing the birth certificate.  There is a double-entry transcription in March quarter, 1842 in the Malton Registration District for Mary Jane Gray, although the image shows only one Mary Jane Gray.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Thanks Bumble B

I think that MJ was baptised in Apr 1842 parents Henry and Mary.    You are right tho I will have to order a BC.    1844 birth Malton looks best bet?????

Now have the BC.    Only name on it is Mary, no Jane.   Father William and mother Elizabeth Kneeshaw.     Problem now is she calling herself Mary Jane on her MC to John Monkman or is this a completely different Mary ???????    On the subsequent cenuses 1881, 91, 01 and 11 it states that she was born in Settrington in 1844 which corresponds with the BC.     No mention of second name Jane on any of the census shown.

I wonder if she was just missed off the 1851 and was actually with her family.  :-\

After further research have found that the Mary J marrying John Monkman is the correct one.    They have a child named William Gray Monkman.    William Gray is Marys fathers name. Why  she added Jane to her name is a mystery???

Thanks to all who helped.
