Looking for 'Mary White' help please...
« on: Friday 08 January 16 11:25 GMT (UK) »
Hi there,
I've been researching the White family of Leicestershire in particular a Mary White (born circa 1857) who married 'Edward Charles' a farmer from Market Harborough. (Fell to his death in his barn age 58)

On the 1901 Census Mary and Edward are recorded with their family including their eldest daughter 'Gertrude' age 22yrs.

Looking at earlier census records to find 'Mary' In the 1881 census I came across her daughter 'Gertrude' (2yrs) in the home of 'Elizabeth White' and her family whereby 'Gertrude' is shown as her 'granddaughter'

This led me to believe that 'Elizabeth' was 'Mary's mother yet I can't find Mary and her mother together in any census records.

On the 1861 Census 'Elizabeth' (31) and her husband Joseph (20) are shown together as lodgers yet there is no trace of 'Mary' who would have been 3 or 4 yrs of age.

Could it be that 'Mary' was illegitimate and was elsewhere or that her daughter 'Gertrude' wasn't the granddaughter of Elizabeth on the 1881 census?

Hope the above isn't too confusing... Any suggestions or assistance appreciated..

Regards
John

Can you clarify, is Mary's maiden name White or is his her married name?

I can't find a marriage between Edward Charles and Mary White, do you have any details of the marriage?

Sarah A 16
Jane 8
Mary 4 granddaughter.

1851 Stoke Albany
Martha Sumpter 46 widow
Betsey 21 daughter Stoke Albany

Sarah 4
Martha 6

Elizabeth Sumpter married Joseph white at Market Harborough Dec 1860.7a 67
Daughter Mary marries as Sumpter Leicester June 1880 to Edward Charles.7a 343

That's where the confusion starts.
Mary Sumpter was born Mar 1857 Market Harbrough 7a 17

She was baptised at Stoke Albany 23.10.1859 at the same time as her Cousin Anne d of Libbens and Eliza Sumpter labourer
