Fitzgerald, Mullane, Riordan and Burke in Doneraile, Cork
« on: Monday 18 January 16 13:36 GMT (UK) »
Hi I am researching my maternal grandparents John Burke b 1909 and Mary Fitzgerald b 1912 in Doneraile, Cork. Marys parents were John Fitzgerald and Bridget (Delia) Mullane b.30/10/1886 m. 06/08/1906 and d. May 1954. Bridget parents were James Mullane and Mary Riordan m. 15/02/1874.
I believe the Fitzgerald family may still have a house and live in Doneraile. John Burke and Mary Fitzgerald came to Jersey Channel Islands in the 1930s where they married and remained until their deaths in the 1970s. Mary sisters, Nell, Bridget and Johanna(Josie) also came to Jersey to live. The only thing i know about John Burke is that he had a sister Mary Jo (Johanna?Josephine?) and that his mother left when they were young and their father could not care for them. My mother seems to remember that they were brought up in a children's home so any info on this institution could help, it could have been the Christian Brothers? Any info on any of these surnames, especially in and around Doneraile greatly appreciated.Thank you!

This is possibly John BURKE with his parents Thomas and Catherine on the 1911 census - LINK

Do you have John's marriage certificate which should show his father's name?

This is possibly Mary FitzGERALD's family LINK

LINK to birth record of John BURKE b. Oct 17 1909
Mother’s name shown as Quilligan

There are just three BURKE births in Mallow recorded with this mother’s surname LINK

I am not seeing an obvious marriage for Thomas and Catherine

But I would wonder if this was Catherine on the 1901 census in light of a son named Simon - LINK

Yes and the date is correct 17/10/1909. I have this on his entry certificate to Jersey from the 1930s. And if mother is Quilligan...he had a younger sister which vague info suggested was Mary or Mary Jo? but there is a Kathleen born with mother Quilligan in 1912....interesting, maybe we have been searching an incorrect name.

It is possible that Kathleen was known as a different name

If John BURKE's DoB is the same I would look for the official birth certificate which would confirm the parent's names

If Thomas and Catherine turn out to be correct I would look at
Thomas BURKE born to John BURKE and Catherine BRIEN Apr 02 1882 Doneraile as a good lead

and
Catherine QUILLIGAN born to Simon QUILLIGAN and Kate McCARTHY not sure which one but
Mary shown on 1901 census was born in Fermoy Dec 22 1889

edited to add
should have said age correct with 1901 census family should be only 16 or 17 in 1911
