Rothes Estate

Hi. I have just found out that my great grandfather was Factor at the Rothes Estate from about 1875 when he was only 22. His father was a Factor at the Smeaton Estate so it must have been a family thing.
I have found quite a few newspaper cuttings about him being there and he is in the valuation rolls in 1875. The question is, why was he there for just 4-5 years?
Are there any archives for the estate where I can see why he left? By 1881 when his son was born they had moved to Dunbar. His life wasn't always easy and money was a problem so I am wondering if he left what looks like his ideal job or if he had to go.
Any help or ideas would be great.

The Rothes Estate archives are held by the Fife Council Archive Centre, Carleton House, Markinch, KY7 6AQ - brief descriptive catalogue online.
