can anyone help please. my sisterinlaw has a document that gives this information:-
BT samuel helps 12th march 1797 trowbridge wiltshire.
 REG lettes
would this mean he was not their child? that they adopted him and baptised him as a helps. cant find any lettes families. maybe it was spelt incorrectly.

I don't really understand what you mean Milly.

There's a baptism at St.James, Trowbridge   12/3/1797

Samuel Helps son of George and Mary Helps

There are on the website Familysearch three listings for Samuels baptism, one as Samuel Helps, one as Samuel ?, and one as Samuel welks, all on the 12 March 1797,

What it means is that the surname is unclear.
So your sis in laws document means.   "BTSamuel helps". This is what the transcriber thought the Bishops Transcripts said.

REGlettes, this is what someone thinks the ParishREG said.

The parents and date of baptism are the same in each case.

Hope that's clear,

Mike

There are many baptisms for Helps surname in Wiltshire around that time, but no lettes or welks,
So I guess Helps is actually the correct surname.

Mike

Added,  the parents were George and Mary
