Looking for Thomas CORR and Mary née HEMMING after 1876
« on: Friday 22 January 16 22:55 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help me find Thomas CORR and Mary HEMMING after their marriage in 1876?

Thomas Corr:
  • 1855, Mar Q born in Birmingham.
  • 1861 census living at 58 Moland Street with his parents Felix and Harriet.
  • 1871 census "tool maker" living at 8 Meredith Road with his widowed father "Thomas Felix".
  • 1876 (at marriage) "machinist" living at Mile Stone Lane, Handsworth. Father deceased.
  • 1876, 6 Aug - Thomas married Mary HEMMING at St James, Handsworth
    (witnesses: Isiah and Emma Hemming).
Mary Hemming:
  • 1856 (approx.) born possibly in Stourbridge, Worcestershire (according to 1861 census).
  • 1861 census probably living at Summer Row, Handsworth with parents John and Mary A.
  • 1871 census: several possibilities, none which exactly match the 1861.
  • 1876 (at marriage) living at Mile Stone Lane, Handsworth. Father John Hemming "mixer at glass works".
Many thanks,

Paul

According to 1891 Census Jonathan is a widower once again.   He and Mary had 4 children:

Edith bc.1881 Birmingham
Alfred bc.1883    "
Martha bc.1888   "
Clara b.1890       !

On the 1881 census Mary is listed as Mary Ann - in 1891 Jonathan is living in Tipton, Staffs. - this comes under the Dudley registration district and deaths index shows a Mary Ann Spittle bc.1855 died Dec.1890 Dudley.

Annette

Added - of Mary's 4 children only the eldest survived.   Alfred died 1892, Martha and Clara in 1891.
Scopes (One-Name Study - Worldwide)
Suffolk - Grist, Knights, Bullenthorpe, Watcham
Scotland - Spence, Horne, Cowan, Moffat
London -  Monk

Both - thank you.

I hadn't spotted that marriage! (I'd had a quick look in the GRO index for a remarriage for Mary, but I can see now that it's indexed under CARR. I should have thought to check for that, I've been caught out before by Corr vs Carr.)

Is that marriage in the Birmingham PR collections on Ancestry?

And thank you for the suggestion for Thomas's death. What is the source of the date 5/9/1878 please? (I can see the matching GRO index entry). If that's him, I wonder what he was doing all the way down there!?
