Alexander Anderson d 22 Sep 1850
« on: Saturday 23 January 16 20:57 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to determine the parentage of this man.  I believe him to be born in Kilconquhar, Fife, Scotland in 1777 to William Anderson and Agnes Couper.  However other Ancestry people have either no parents or different parents.
He had been living in Poplar/Bow/Bromley London, but at the time he died he was in Kensington.
Occupation:  Carpenter/block maker.  Married to a Mary, born Worsley, Surrey.  Ancestry folk have a marriage to Mary Greatach but this does not match my Alexander.
I have his Will, but of course this does not give his parents.
If I obtain the death certificate will that give me his parents?  Is there an easier way of dong that other than having a hard copy sent from UK.  (I am in Australia).

Any help would be appreciated.
Regards Ruth

Hi

As Alexander was 73 when he died, it's most unlikely one of his parents would have reported his death so you will not get the answers you want by buying his death cert.  Even if he had died in Scotland, it's unlikely, as parental info on Scottish death certs was introduced from 1855

Thanks Carol and Steve

Good to know I am not wasting time and money trying to obtain the death cert.

I will try the London Gazette to see if he is listed and also see if I can pinpoint when he moved to London from Scotland.

If any has any other ideas on how I may establish his parentage, please let me know.

Do you have him on the 1841 census?  I can see 2 possible entries for the name and approx birthyear allowing that 1841 ages were rounded down to the nearest 5yrs

One aged 65 in the Chelsea Hospital - occ shown as "Corporal"

And this one - but the occ does not fit

1 High St Middlesex - all shown as born in county except Alex snr

Alexander Anderson 67 Tavern keeper - not born in county
Mary 50
Alex 22
Mary 20
Emily 19
Ann 17
John 14
Jane 13
HO107 Piece 738/18 Folio 38 Page 1

Several of the childrens baptismal entries show his occ as "Servant"

I have seen those 2 as well - but not the correct family.  I cannot find him in 1941 census, but do have his wife and 3 of children in 1851 census after his death. And after that I lose them again.

I wonder if he was visiting Scotland at the time the census was taken.

I am more confident that this is my Alexander, but I would like to prove it, and I think the ony proof would be to prove his parents.

Thanks for your help.
