Saville Family
« on: Monday 25 January 16 00:48 GMT (UK) »
Greetings!  I am trying to locate family from England.  My names are Hadfield and Saville.  They come from the Ashton under Lyne area.  Hadfields from Stalybridge and the Savilles from Lancashire.  I found a listing for a Joseph and Sarah Saville that has me curious.  Here is what I know.  My grandmother Helen, was the daughter of Mary Ann Saville, who according to records, was the daughter of Joseph and Sarah (Hodgson) Saville.  Sarah came to America with two daughters, Polly (Mary Ann) and Emma.  But the census listing I found in the English records, shows a Joseph and Sarah with daughters Mary Ann and Emma, at about the right ages.  But it also shows a lot of other children.  Not sure why she would come to America with only two children, but now I am trying to find out if this is my Joseph and Sarah.  How to I find Joseph?  I think he died in England and is buried in Lancashire.  His last child, Emma, was born in 1876 in Audenshaw.  Where do I go from here?  Also, I find very little on a Joseph married to a Sarah Hodgson.  Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

So we have some names/birthdates to work from - here's the 1881 entry for the family

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QKXJ-CJML

When and where was Helen born? Was she illegitimate?

What year did Sarah emigrate? Depending on that - the older children may have been married by then

You can look for a death for Joseph using freebmd  www.freebmd.org.uk

Here's the 1871 entry so any marriage is going to be in the 1850's - SEE LATER REPLY BELOW

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KZP7-N3H

The above 1871 entry on FS is incomplete and should show the following children all b Audenshaw

Ruth Saville  10
Hannah 13
Joseph     8
Christopher  6
William  5
Edward  3
John  2
Mary Ann     8 Months

Think it was also a second marriage for Sarah.
Cheshire BMDs have a
Joseph Saville and Sarah- surname transcribed as Hodges rather than Hodgson
1869 Ashton under Lyne Christ Church.
It shows Sarah's previous name as Rance
Free BMD has the marriage taking place Dec Qtr

Cheshire BMd have a death for a Joseph Field Saville 1883.
This could possibly be your Joseph as there is a baptism on Ancestry's Yorkshire Baptisms in 1831
Father was James, a Mason, and that ties in with his marriage details to Martha.
You would need the death cert to be absolutely sure :)

Added    The burial record has him being buried at St Stephen, Audenshaw 20 March 1883
aged 51.
