MURRAY family in Cashel circa 1800-1810
« on: Friday 29 January 16 20:09 GMT (UK) »
Michael MURRAY was born around 1808, and declared his birth place as Cashel Tipperary when enlisting in the 53rd Shropshire Regiment in Jan 1827 aged 19 occ labourer.
He served until about 1843 when he left the army , it appears due to ill health.
His record says he served with the regiment in Gibraltar Malta and the Ionian Islands before returning to Ireland. He has been identified as follows
1841 Plymouth St Andrew Michael MURRAY 30 soldier b Ireland
HO 107/ 2360 Pg 5 1851 -  3 w____ Place Drypool
Michael Murray 44 Chelsea ? Pensioner b Ireland
Mary Murray 40 b Ireland
RG 9/3570 1861 - Norwood Beverley St Nicholas ( part of Hull ) Yorkshire
Michael Murray 54 Chelsea ? Pensioner b Ireland
Mary Murray 50 b Ireland
RG10/4769 1871 – Norwood East York militia hospital Beverley St Nicholas
Michael MURRAY 64 Chelsea Pensioner staff serj East York Militia b Ireland
Mary MURRAY 60 b Ireland
It is a possiblity that Elizabeth MURRAY who married a soldier in the 53rd during this period was related to Michael.
Therefore it would be interesting to see if he had a sibling named Elizabeth, and whether she married in her home  town 1823- 1830. The target name is Gabriel WELLS.
Michael's marriage also remains un identified.
Does anyone have access to these records from Tipperary, or can point me in the right direction for further research.

The IFHF site https://rootsireland.ie/ is now subscription but have indexed records. You will need to register.

http://registers.nli.ie/registers have RC parish records scanned for browsing - you know the parish - but they are not indexed. It is free access.

https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/ have C of I records indexed. I think this is free.

As an aside my Murrays came from Tipperary - Borrisokane area - and were army recruits in the 87th RIF. The earliest Murray I have identified born 1813 died in Cashel Military Hospital in 1864.
Seeking: RC baptism Philip Murray Feb ish 1814 ? nr Chatham Kent.

Does his army record state India at all?
HO 107/ 2360 Pg 5 1851 -  3 w____ Place Drypool
That's Williams Place.

To keep on the back burner I found this marriage, although you haven't said Michael served in India:
Name:   Michael Murray
Gender:   Male
Age:   20
Birth Date:   1809
Marriage Date:   14 Sep 1829
Marriage Place:   Ghazeepore, Bengal, India
Spouse:   Mary Connor
FHL Film Number:   498960
which is in the British Armed Forces marriages 1830 p 912 so the certificate could be obtained sometime once you know Michaels' father's name from a baptism to see if this is the same MM.

Seeking: RC baptism Philip Murray Feb ish 1814 ? nr Chatham Kent.

Michael MURRAY and Mary CONNOR marriage in Ghazeepore  Diocese of Calcutta India
14th Sept 1829 , Michael in 38th Regiment age 20.

"In 1818 the 38th regiment was sent to South Africa to fight in the Kaffir War, moving to India and Burma for 14 years in 1822. Its next overseas posting was in 1840 to the Ionian Islands,"

there is no sign of a female MURRAY in the 1841 census in Plymouth, so I think they married after, if at all, I haven't found a likely entry in BMD, but it could be anywhere.

Thank you all for your help on this.

I have quickly looked at Cashel bapt scans , and didn't see anything, but it needs a very careful look for any MURRAY. So it will take some time.

Forgot to add these records
