Hi Polar,
I posted info from 1851 census in the hope you would come back and confirm the wife as Rachael
and not Mary, which you have.

Are you aware that William Mason born abt 1815, this date from school records, had 2 brothers?

Have you found George Mason on any census?  What info do you have about George?

Have you investigated the Mary Jackson listed as Cousin to William in 1851?

Lots of questions, but there are a lot of Mason families in the Parish of Duffield.

William, I have brothers Jacob and John, all 3 attending Strutt Mill School are they the same as you have.
William and Rachael on census from 1841 to 1881
The only George I have found  is on 1841 census age 45 wife Ellen age 40 but none of the childrens names match but again Jacob and John could be married the same as William.George and Ellen were married 31 Dec 1809 All saints, Derby (nee Bullock)
Georges address is Brook St, All Saints, Derby.
They could also have been non conformist.
Mary Jackson, I have b1837, father Thomas  1841 with family mother dead.1851 with William and Rachael. Any confirmation and help, gratefully recieved

Hi Polar,

The Strutt's school admission registers form part of the overall book keeping system for their cotton spinning business and as such are precise records.  The 3 Mason children you have, Will, Jacob and John, are incorrect because the trade of their Father was "White Smith" and you know that George Mason was a TAILOR.

The school registers have the following headings

NAME  AGE   RESIDENCE  FATHER'S TRADE  ADMISSION ON   LEFT ON OBSERVATIONS,REASON
                                                                                                              FOR LEAVING

The children you should have are:-

George Mason   9   Gutter            Taylor          21.2.1821          7.12.1821   Gone to work at mill
Will Mason        6   Gutter            Taylor            7.3.1821         12.3.1821     Wanted
Samuel Mason   7   Gutter            Nailer          21.6.1824         27.8.1824     Another School

The comment "Wanted" does not mean anything sinister, he had failed to give a reason why he
was not attending school.

Re Samuel, the trade Nailer could be an error either by the child or the teacher, the date of leaving is also incorrect. However if you follow through with Samuel you will see that on his two marriage he states his father was George Mason a Tailor.

1.  married 12.2.1839 Duffield Harriet Timperley (he was a Potter)
2.  married 10.12.1848 St. Peters, Derby Betsy Booth both were widowed and the witnesses were
     William Mason and George Hadley.
Samuel can be found in 1841 Census, Greenhill Lane, Alfreton occupation "Bottle Maker"

The Gutter today is in the Nottingham Road Area of Belper near to where the pot works were, these later moved to Denby and is present day Denby Pottery.

Thanks Spendlove,
I did have George, William and Samuel on the same list from Strutt Mill School, but as most of our family have been, Blacksmiths, Whitesmiths, boilermakers etc I followed that line.
Rachaels sister Louisa married a Booth wonder if Georges wife was related. Will have to look and see, gets more intriguing.
Do you have the mothers name ?
Thanks again

Hi,

Yes it is important to find the various family connections, which is why I asked if you had discovered
how Mary Jackson age 14 in  1851 described as "Cousin" was actually related to William Mason.
These connections may assist you in finding out who George Mason the tailor was and where he was born.

In the 1841 Census, Cow Hill, Belper as you said Thomas Jackson, wife deceased, with 2 children
however living in the same house is Mary Hadley.  Thomas Jackson's wife appears to have been
Jane  ?.

Not sure what you mean  - "do you have the mothers name"

Hi,

Are the George Mason and Ellen living in Derby 1851 Census?

If so he  states born 1794 Derby and is an Ag. Lab.  His wife Ellen born 1799 Ashbourne,
so would have been 12 when George Jnr was born.

If this is not the couple your mention, can you post what you have?

The only clue I can offer is the Bpt of Samuel Mason, 25th December 1817  son of George Mason
and Mary.
This Bpt took place in St. Johns Belper, which was a Chapelry of Duffield Church.

A possible marriage is:-
26th May 1807 Duffield
George Mason   Widow = Mary Stone   Spinster

His first marriage could have been:-
27th June 1790 Duffield  George Mason bachelor =  Mary Bridges  spinster.

You will have to do more research to confirm this.
